Message from the Principal
Mrs. Margaret Paxton

Hello Southlands Families!  The first week of school was a very exciting.  It began with two false fire alarms on Tuesday!  Luckily, the VSB electricians came quickly and fixed the faulty sensor the same day and we had no more visits from VFD! Now, our kindergarten students are almost finished their gradual entry.  It will be so good to have them at school all day – we can tell they are ready!  The rest of our classes are happily in place.

We know that the first week back can be stressful for many students and parents, too.  Change is hard.  When my own children faced challenges, I relied upon the wisdom of author and speaker Barbara Coloroso.  Her Six Critical Life Messages for caregivers to relay to their children are:
  • I believe in you.
  • I trust you.
  • I know you can handle it.
  • You are listened to.
  • You are cared for.
  • You are very important to me.
I hope you will find them helpful, too! See you soon!
VSB Sep Newsletter

Mrs Paxton has sent the Southlands Sep Newsletter home with the students on Friday. Please read through it, especially the back where the Academic Integrity Policy is outlined. Please send back the slip to win pizza or subway lunch with Mrs Paxton.

Garden Committee Update

Throughout the year, Southlands' Garden Committee looks after the Annual Spring and Fall Garden clean-ups, general garden care of the circular butterfly garden and planters, and coordinates the Summer garden care program. We also support teachers in the Outdoor Classroom and Garden Program, including garden planning, grant writing, summer garden care. If you are interested in joining, please email southlands.elementary.garden@gmail.com ~ Everyone is welcome. No experience required. This is a very rewarding experience with many opportunities to grow the program and impact our school community.

VSB Mini School

Grade 7 Parents and Caregivers,

VSB’s Mini School programs provide enrichment opportunities for highly motivated students who are Vancouver residents and consistently work at an above average or Applying level and have excellent work habits (achieve B averages or higher). Students must apply to each program separately by picking up an application package at the school where the program is offered. For more information, please see this brochure or visit this page.

Info nights start as early as October 7th! Check out brochure for further dates and deadlines.
Grade 7 Graduation Planning

Hello Grade 7 Parents and Caregivers,

Graduation marks an important milestone in your child’s life, which celebrates the successful completion of elementary school and allows us to reflect on the wonderful experiences they’ve had along the way. Graduation at Southlands is a special event with many wonderful traditions – from chocolate fountains and a photo booth to a fun graduation party and a parting gift to Southlands.

There is a lot to be done throughout the school year to make this event in June a success and fundraising is a key element. Based on experience from past years, the Grade 7s will need to raise approximately $5,000 to cover:
  • Graduation Ceremony, including light lunch
  • Graduation party
  • Decorations + partywares
  • Photobooth
  • Candy table + chocolate fountains
  • Gift for Southlands
Grade 7 Parent and Caregiver commitment and participation is also critical to help organize and lead the various activities to make this a special day. To kick-off this year’s planning cycle, the Dorrington’s are hosting the Grad Planning Meeting (adults only) on Monday, September 30th from 7-9 pm (3959 West 32nd Ave).

Kind regards,
Jodie and Jon Dorrington (Quentin)
