Greetings, Southlands Families.

Last week we saw the start of the Southlands Safety Patrol. We have 20 dedicated members who will help both adults and students cross Camosun Street safely before and after school.  We are grateful for their service!

Student Leadership went class to class last week to talk about our Hallowe’en Costume Contest on Friday, Oct. 30th.  Leadership members will award prizes to three students in primary and three in intermediate who have the spookiest, the most creative and the most homemade/recycled costumes.  This year, unfortunately, we cannot hand out treats or share candy in classes, for safety reasons.  A gentle reminder: students should not wear Hallowe’en masks on the playground at recess and lunch, should leave any fake weapons at home, and should follow teachers’ directions if a costume becomes a distraction.  Costumes are totally optional, of course.  Student Leadership meets at lunch (usually Tuesdays, but this week Wednesday) in the undercover area and everyone is welcome.

Teachers will be in touch soon about Conferences on November 4th and 5th.  Please remember there is early (2 pm) dismissal on both of those days.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch!

The Fall Food Drive has ended this week. We collected 278 items and exceeded our goal! Thank you to everyone for your generosity

This week Ms Phung's and Ms Prins' classes had the opportunity to learn all about daffodils thanks to the generous efforts of Caroline and Matt Dickson, Keira's parents. Caroline organised the purchase of 200 bulbs to plant along the front fence and under the Southlands sign. Thanks to Matt's trench-digging efforts the children were able to plant all the bulbs, which should bloom this spring making Southlands even more beautiful!

Greetings, Southlands Families.

We emailed a newsletter home on Friday afternoon.  Please let us know if you did not get it.  Of special note:  the Southlands Safety Patrol begins on Monday.  Please watch for Safety Patrol Students who will be at the crosswalk at 37th and Camosun.  They will have white hard hats, vests and red STOP signs.  These students have been trained by a special constable from the VPD.  We thank them for their service!

Student Leadership will be winding up the Fall Food Drive on Wednesday.  We have set a goal of 250 items to represent every student and staff member at our school.  Thank you for helping us reach our goal. The Student Leadership Club meets every Tuesday at 12:15 and anyone can join!

Friday is a Provincial Professional Day.  Our teachers and support staff members will be joining online learning opportunities with other educators from all over the province.  Teresa and I will be in the office.

Lastly, I am looking for a baby who will be 4 -5 months old in January.  I teach a program called Roots of Empathy.  We invite a parent and baby to “teach” a class of students about the baby’s temperament and development, once a month in a series of visits.  There will, of course, be a plan to do this virtually if the pandemic is still an issue.  If anyone you know had a baby in September or October, please encourage them to get in touch with me if they are at all interested in learning more.  We find it is a rewarding experience for everyone.

Thank you all, and as always, if you have any questions of concerns, please get in touch.
