Hello Southlands families

After one month of being back at school, whatever form that has taken for your family, I hope you are all settling in well. It has been amazing to see the many ways in which our wonderful teachers and staff have been able to create a safe, supportive, connected environment for the children, even with all the challenges we're facing this year. Your commitment to the Southlands community has been so good to see as well, whether it is supporting your children's online learning, taking part in the PAC mask and herb sale fundraisers, or safely greeting other families outside at the school.

Although our approach will have to be very different this year, the PAC will still be focusing on building community and supporting our children's learning and growth at school. We invite you to attend the online PAC meeting this Wednesday, Oct 14th at 7pm to find out what PAC activities will look like and meet this year's PAC Executive committee. If you are new to the school or just want to learn more about what the PAC is, what is does, and how you can be involved, this will be a great place to start. As always, Ms Paxton will be joining us to give an update and answer your questions, which you are welcome to submit ahead of time, by emailing southlands.elementary@gmail.com

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, and thank you for your commitment to our children and this community.

Southlands PAC Chair 2019-20 & 2020-21

Greetings, Southlands Families.

The Student Leadership Club has initiated a Fall Food Bank Drive.  We are hoping to collect as many donations as possible before Oct. 22nd.  The Food Bank requested healthy foods, low in salt, sugar and fat.  Leadership students have circulated posters with the twelve most needed items, such as tinned beans, tinned fish, dry pasta and sauce in jars.  You can also send a cash or cheque donation if you wish, for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.  Thank you!

Last week, teachers held virtual Meet the Teacher events.  If you were unable to attend, please contact your child’s teacher for an introduction.

We wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving and look forward to connecting with you soon.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch.

Margaret Paxton
Principal (@SouthlandsIB)

Thank you to all the families who participated in the Southlands Herbs n Pumpkin sale.
Two great opportunities are coming up this month to learn more about supporting your children's mental health and wellbeing. On Oct 14th take part in a *powerful *and fun conversation with the founder of Mind Up, Goldie Hawn, and Dr. Jean Clinton: a child psychiatrist and expert on the central role that relationships, connectedness, belonging and attachment play in children's well-being and ability to learn. Learn the why and how of connecting love to well-being, education, relationships, and community; and how together with the power of love we can support our young people, building their brains and resiliency. Register here

The second opportunity will be at the DPAC meeting. A panel of students will speak on their experiences dealing with increased mental health issues during the pandemic. They will be joined by Alexandra Wilson, SACY, and Paula Foran,  District Area Counsellor, who will provide input on what we can do to support our children. Register for the meeting here.
Every October, we have a school-wide focus on being inquirers.

Inquiry is an important part of the IB Primary Years Programme.  As well as being one of the Learner Profile attributes, it is also the main method of teaching and learning in the PYP.  Inquiry-based learning emphasizes curiosity and making connections between what students already know and new information.  Students learn how to learn and their questions drive the direction of the learning.

Make sure to subscribe to Ms Wood's IB PYB Blog

The Southlands PAC will not be able to offer our always popular choir program this year, but children interested in choir may wish to register directly with the teacher, Ms Cotton, who is running an independent program outside of the schools this year. This is not a PAC program so please contact Ms Cotton directly to register.

Hello Everyone,

Choir is back!! If you love to sing and perform here is your opportunity!

Choir practices will be held on Saturdays this year,  at St. Philip's Anglican Church, 3737 W27th Ave (just west of Dunbar).  Our first choir day will be Saturday, October 17.
  • Junior Choir (Grades 1 - 3) will be held from 9:00 - 9:45 am.
  • Senior Choir (Grades 4 - 7) will be held from 3:45 - 4:45 pm.
Our plan is to video a Winter Concert in December.

Wearing masks will be mandatory. We will provide one if your child forgets theirs. All BC Health and safety protocols will be strictly maintained. If your child is sick they must stay home. The choir practices will be broadcast over Zoom at the same time as the in-person practice so if your child is feeling unwell they can still participate and sing along with their friends.

Tuition this year for choir is $160 plus a $140 fee for facility rental (this is less than $5 per choir practice) for a total of $300. The choir fee is to be paid in full with a current dated cheque made out to George Cotton Productions and covers the entire year. We do not accept e-transfers. We look forward to seeing you in October.

Colleen and Caitlin

Southlands masks have been ordered! If you have not already, please place your order ASAP to ensure you get the size you want.

Show your sockeye spirit around town, buy a few for relatives this Christmas, or grab some extras to have on hand.

In this world of social distancing, if you are ordering groceries online from Stong's, please pick "Southlands Elementary School" from the drop down menu so that the PAC can earn a rebate. Thank you for your support!
