Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.
If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.
If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello Southlands Families.
On Monday it will be May! Time flies when you are having fun and there has been a lot of fun at learning at school in the past few weeks. We have been gardening with Victory Garden staff. Thank you so much to the PAC for funding these lessons. We can't wait to see how the garden grows.
Thank you to all of the families who were able to attend the student-led conferences this week. If you were not able to attend, please contact your child's teacher to arrange a time to talk.
On Thursday, May 4th, we will be having an earthquake drill at 2:00 pm as will all VSB schools. Students should be prepared to be outside for about 45 minutes, rain or shine. We will be practicing Family Reunification with a select few families. If you have not been contacted to take part in the Reunification practice, please pick your child up at 3:03 as usual. Have a wonderful week ahead.

It's that time of year again! Dina is starting to put together the Southlands Yearbook and would love to include your photos!
Specifically, she is looking for photos of:
- Your group/club activities
- PAC activities/Volunteers in action
- Anything else you would like to share
You can email the photos to southlands.yrbook@gmail.com or if you have a lot, either send her a link to your cloud storage or you can also leave a USB flash drive at the office (She will be sure to return it to you).

2023/2024 PAC Executive and Committee Nominations Open
Hello Southlands families,
It's that time of the year that PAC is inviting and welcoming nominations for both executive and committee positions for next school year. If you or have someone amazing in mind that would be great to step up for any positions, please let us know. We also welcome you to connect with the parent volunteers who are in the current position if you have any questions. Please note that if the positions of Chair, Treasurer and Fundraising are not filled by volunteers for 2023/2024, then the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) can no longer function and all programs supported by PAC will no longer be available.

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at UBC are running our Phenomenal Physics Summer Camps, on campus, for students in grades 2-9.
In collaboration with the Computer Science Department, they are offering a gender-diverse/female-identified physics & computer science camp this July 17-21, 2023. They are thrilled to offer this STEM camp, based on equity, diversity and inclusion recommendations from our computer science colleagues; however, the current enrolment is quite low and they want this inaugural camp to be a success and continue to run in future.
If you have any questions about this camp, other camp offerings, or would like more information about their general outreach programs, please don’t hesitate to contact Kirsty Dickson, at outreach@phas.ubc.ca.

The Southlands PAC Direct Donation campaign for the 2023/2024 school year will be ending on May 31st. We really need your help to reach this year's fundraising goals which are $7,000 for the Outdoor classroom and $5,000 for Classroom funds. Without donations, we risk not being able to support these programs.
Our total received to date is $5220
Important update: VSB is no longer providing tax receipts for cash or cheque donations.
To donate & receive a tax receipt:
- Donate Online: http://vsb.schoolcashonline.com/Fee/Details/1869/196/false/true and select "E-Southlands PAC"- this is the quickest way to receive a tax receipt
To donate without a tax receipt:
- Provide cash or write a cheque payable to "Southlands Elementary School" noting "2023 PAC Direct Donation" in the memo and include the pink Donor Recognition Form
Just a reminder, please remember to send the Donor Recognition form to school with the details of your donation, even if you donate online. This lets us know if you would like your name to be included in our newsletter recognition of donations or if you would like to be anonymous. If we do not receive the form, your donation will be considered anonymous.
