Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello Southlands Families,

We hope you enjoyed the weekend. Instead of wishing you a Happy Mothers' Day, I'd like to honour all of the caregivers of Southlands students. We know that it is not only biological parents who are raising the children and our respect and gratitude goes out to all of you.

On Friday afternoon we sent home a Southlands School Newsletter. Check your email to read about what has been going on at school and view some photos of the activities students have been enjoying.

As always - if you have questions or concerns - please reach out to me or your child's teacher.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (she/her)
Principal

The next PAC meeting is coming up on 14 May over Webex at 7pm. Every parent and caregiver with a child at Southlands is automatically part of the Parent Advisory Council. Please join us and hear about what the PAC is working on.

Send any additional agenda items you may want to cover to Nina at southlands.elementary@gmail.com

On Wednesday, May 15 ONE TO ONE is hosting a virtual workshop for interested parents/caregivers of students in Grades 1-2 called Come Read with Me. To register, please go to https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/one-to-one-literacy-society-32436852611

As a reminder, Come Read with Me is an interactive workshop based on our tutor training and facilitated by a ONE TO ONE educator designed to give parents and caregivers the opportunity to learn positive strategies to help them support their children when reading at home. Participating families will receive a digital resource package including the “Reading Success at Home” handbook. This program is available at no cost to families across British Columbia through the generous support of our donors.

Call for graduation slideshow photos

We're putting together a slideshow for the upcoming 7th grade graduation and need families' help! We want to celebrate how all of our children have grown, so we're asking for three photos of your 7th grader over the years, ideally:
  • a baby photo
  • a pre-k or kindergarten photo
  • a recent photo from this year
Please email photos to miss.megan@gmail.com by May 17 and include the name of your child, so we can be sure everyone's included.

CEDAR Camp 2024 will be held on the UBC Vancouver Campus from July 15th to July 26th. The camp is open to Indigenous youth, ages 8-12 years old. As always, this camp is subsidized (free to register). We provide breakfast and lunch. Our goal is to plant a seed of interest into STEM fields at the post-secondary level. We’ve reached out to Indigenous and Science faculty to help provide engaging activities to give insight into the world of science.

Please register at https://cedar.ubc.ca/camper-registration/
