Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello Southlands Families,

On Friday, I sent an email home to let families know that I will be retiring at the end of this school year. For me, the past five years at Southlands have been amazing. I will never forget the friends I have made, the students who have taught me so much, and the wonderful families that make up our very special school community.  It is very hard to leave, but I know that Southlands will continue to thrive and that everyone will support each other through the change. We survived COVID 19 together and stayed in touch despite the isolation. Highlights for me include working with the PAC who have been so supportive, adopting Streamer as our Sockeye mascot, going to camp with the grade 6s and 7s, and of course, the unveiling of the house post this February.  I am pleased to let you know that the new principal will be Mr. Craig Larson, who is currently the vice-principal at James Cook Elementary in East Vancouver.

As always, if you have any questions of concerns, please get in touch.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (she/her)

We're putting together a slideshow for the upcoming 7th grade graduation and need families' help! We want to celebrate how all of our children have grown, so we're asking for three photos of your 7th grader over the years, ideally:
  • a baby photo
  • a pre-k or kindergarten photo
  • a recent photo from this year
We’ve extended the deadline to give families more time to include their kids in this special tribute. Please email photos to miss.megan@gmail.com by May 27 and include the name of your child.

The PAC executive committee is preparing a letter to send to the VSB Trustees and Provincial government ministers, asking for more staff to be hired for Vancouver schools.

This year, schools all over Vancouver have been dealing with shortages of teachers, support workers and educational assistants. This has had a negative effect on students and staff, especially students with disabilities and extra support needs. The Vancouver DPAC, PACs from many Vancouver schools, and the teachers' and staff unions, have all written to the VSB and Provincial government about this issue, and we would like to add our voice to the calls for action.

We are asking Southlands families to complete this survey to tell us how staff shortages have affected your child and family. Your answers will be anonymous, unless you decide to include your contact information. The letter will be sent on behalf of the whole Southlands community without identifying any individuals, in support of our children and the teachers and staff at the school who work so hard to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for them.

Please take a moment to fill in this survey by the deadline of Sunday, June 2nd. You can share the link with anyone who might not have received it yet.

We are kicking off our end-of-year gift card fundraiser!

The gift cards make great gifts for family, friends, teachers, colleagues or even for your own purchases in the future!  The best part is that you pay face value and, at no additional cost to you, Southlands will receive a percentage of the gift card amounts!

This past week, we sent home notices about the fundraiser, but understand that some people did not receive an order form.  For ease, the order form is available online.

In order to ensure that the gift cards are ready before the end of the school year, please drop off your completed order form (along with your cheque or cash, if applicable) in the PAC mailbox located at the school’s office no later than by Wednesday, June 5.  If you are paying by e-transfer, kindly ensure your email address is set out in the order form.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Liz at southlands.giftcards@gmail.com.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION AND SUPPORT!

COPE (Coalition for Progressive Electors) has launched “The Schools We Need” Campaign and want to work with parents, students, union groups, and the public to create actions that will achieve:
  • Adequate staffing in our classrooms
  • More provincial funding, and better use of current funding
  • Improvements to education programs for students,
  • Safe, inclusive schools where all students thrive and feel supported,
  • More childcare spaces,
  • Seismically safe schools,
  • Keeping neighbourhood schools open for growing student population,
  • Better accountability and transparency by elected officials,

COPE invites all interested parents and school community members to attend:
“The Schools We Need” Town Hall Meeting
Date: May 28th
Time: 4 to 7 pm
Place: Russian Hall, 600 Campbell Avenue, Vancouver

Attendees will participate in small table discussions about current key issues facing our schools and to come up with future actions and solutions.

COPE School Board Trustee, Suzie Mah will be highlighting the challenges the school district continues to face along with other guest speakers, including parents and staff.

Important for Mandarin speakers: A native speaker of Mandarin who is well versed in school board issues will be on hand to assist. She will be able to interpret what others are saying and to translate participants' suggestions for the record. All participant suggestions will be summarized and shared with the attendees after the townhall.

COPE also invites parents to complete “The Schools We Need Survey” which has ten questions highlighting ten key issues. Results and ideas for actions from the survey will be summarized and released to the public. The survey will close on June 30th, 2024. You can complete the survey at www.copevancouver.ca/survey
