Hello, Southlands Families!

This week students were even more settled and happy. It is lovely to hear their laughter on the playground and to witness their kindness to one another. Our theme of Caring will continue next week. I have been having conversations with students about how kindness is contagious and when we do something caring, it benefits us, too.

We have sent home student verification and other forms to be signed. Please read them carefully, sign and return by Oct. 1st. Every student who brings back their forms by October 1st will have their name entered to win a pizza lunch, and the class that gets all of their forms in first will get a special treat. Thanks for your help with this.

Next week is Orange Shirt/Reconciliation Week as we anticipate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Thursday. Teacher are planning lesson this week to help students understand why there is a need for Truth and Reconciliation. Please remember that there is no school on Thursday.

Parking Lot: We would like to ask parents and guardians to NOT walk through the staff parking lot when dropping off and picking student up. We want all of our students to get into a habit of safety. Please walk around. Thank you!

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please get in touch.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Southlands PAC is excited to announce that Mozart School of Music is offering flute lessons, taught by Mikyla Jensen, to Southlands students again this year! They will be offered after school and online again, due to continued COVID precautions. However, last year Mozart offered a hybrid option, where students were permitted to take the flute class at their UBC location, while those more comfortable with online, joined remotely, but synchronously.  If there is interest in this option, we will ask Mozart if they are able to offer hybrid again this year.

If you would like to join the Southlands PAC flute program, and/or have questions about it, please contact Julie to register at southlands.elementary.music@gmail.com by Friday October 1st 2021, with:

PAC Directory

Southlands PAC collects contact information for each student and their family on a voluntary basis. This information is made available in a directory for PAC and parent use. The directory is a great way for classmates and the families of Southlands school to connect, and for PAC volunteers to communicate about PAC activities. All information is to be used in the Southlands community only, and is not used for solicitation or any other purpose. The Directory is organized by the PAC and not by Southlands Elementary school staff.

This year the PAC directory has moved online. Instead of paper forms that were sent home every year, the PAC directory can be filled out online. Please take a few minutes to enter your information:

Yearbooks have arrived! If you ordered a 2020-21 yearbook in June it will be sent home with your child/ren some this week, so please check their backpacks. If you have any questions please contact Deena at southlands.yrbook@gmail.com

Hello, Southlands Families!

We hope you had a good weekend. Our staff worked really hard on Friday, planning some units of inquiry in grade groups. We also spent an hour with District Principal of Indigenous Education, Davita Marsden. She taught us some drumming protocols with the beautiful drums that Div. 1 and 2 made last spring. We also learned the Cherokee Morning Song. It was so good!

We will be emailing you our first school newsletter on Monday morning. Here are a couple of additional things we would like you to know about:
  • Our Terry Fox Run will be on Wednesday, Sept. 22nd at 2 pm. We will be running and walking the forest loop from the south trail head, up the big hill and down to the north trailhead. We have arranged for parents to volunteer as marshals along the way. Please, if you can, send a toonie (or more) for Terry one day this week. Student Leaders will collect from classrooms each morning. We still MUST avoid gatherings, so we ask that you please not come to watch the run unless you are one of the volunteers and have spoken to me, Mrs. Paxton. Thanks for understanding.
  • Cross Country Running is back for grades 1 - 7. Mrs. Paxton, Ms. Wood, Ms. Alexandra and Mr. Lee will be supporting the team. Practices will be Tuesday mornings in October. There are three mini-meets on Tuesdays. Parents must be able to pick up and drive their own students to the meet, or send a written or emailed note about an arrangement made with another parent to carpool. Parents must stay at the mini-meet and check in with Mrs. Paxton before leaving. More information will be given to interested students, along with a permission slip. Please ask your child(ren) to listen to morning messages about an information meeting on Tuesday this week.
  • We will soon be sending home a package of forms that must be completed and returned as soon as possible. It includes a personalised contact information sheet for each child, media release and walking field trip forms. Thank you in advance for completing and returning them right away.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please get in touch.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Join us for the first PAC meeting of the year. Every parent and caregiver with a child at Southlands is automatically part of the Parent Advisory Council. Register to get the zoom details, review the agenda, and come hear about the plans for the upcoming year, or join a committee

Please email southlands.elementary@gmail.com if you want to add items to the agenda for meeting.

Class Parents

It's that time of year again that we are looking for class parents for each division. This is a great role to be involved in and doesn't take too much time. It mainly involves sharing information with the class from the PAC and your teacher as needed, helping to create a community within your group and most importantly celebrating and thanking our amazing teachers in the holiday period and at the end of the year.

If you are interested in this role or have any questions, please email michelle.mccarthy09@gmail.com and I would be happy to answer them. Please let me know the division you would like to be a class parent for. If you expressed interest in this role on the first day of school, please let me know which division your child is in. This role can be shared with another parent.

Thank you for volunteering!
Michelle ( Class Parent Coordinator)
