Hello, Southlands Families!

Thank you for your patience this week with the temporary staff who were answering the phone as Teresa was on a well-deserved vacation.

As Monday is Hallowe'en we are expecting that some students will choose to wear costumes. Please remind them that there are to be no masks and no imitation weapons on the playground at recess and lunch. Also - thank you for keeping Hallowe'en candy at home. Students are much more able to focus and learn when they are not buzzing with sugar.

Tuesday is a professional day - no school Tuesday. Teachers have sent home goal-setting conference information for Wed. Nov. 2nd and Thurs. Nov. 3rd. We have Early Dismissal on those days at 2:00 pm.

Please look for a Southlands School Newsletter in your email inboxes on Monday afternoon. Read it to learn more about what is going on around our school.

Best wishes for the week ahead,

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton
Principal

Hello Southlands family,

This year PAC has received a gaming grant that helps enrich our students' learning experiences, including expanding cultural awareness. Coming up next week, we will be bringing arts materials for painting diyas in celebration of Diwali. Shout out to Priya Gupta for organizing this project. If you have any ideas for celebrating cultural diversity, festivals and events, please don't hesitate to let us know. It's a great way to help students celebrate their cultural heritage and deepen their belonging.

Warmly,
Renee

Hello, Southlands Families!

I hope you had a relaxing weekend. I spent Friday with other VSB principals learning about Leading for Equity. It was a great day of learning. One of the things the keynote speaker, Nouman Ashraf (from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto) talked to us about was the importance of being transparent with the community about processes in your school.

I decided to write to you about some of the things we do to help students resolve conflicts, take responsibility for their actions and make amends. It is important to note that every situation is different depending on who was involved, the age of the students and their individual circumstances, while every student is expected and encouraged to behave in ways that are caring, friendly and safe. If students are referred to me for a playground conflict, for example, I interview all parties involved, sometimes together, sometimes individually. We try to arrive at a common understanding of what the conflict was about and what each person's role was. I ask questions such as:  What happened and how did you react? What have you thought about since this happened? What could you have done differently? Who could you go to for help? How will you make this right? What do you need right now? Usually, when students think about what happened they are able to recognize mistakes they have made. I'll often say, "You made a mistake. It's not the end of the world, but we need to fix it." Very often, there are natural consequences that serve as lessons for the students involved.

Ultimately, we are a learning organization, and our goal is to teach children. Therefore, we focus on the learning and the child's development. As always, if you have questions, please let us know.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Trick or treat!!! Drop off one and pick up one!

Many thanks to everyone for dropping off Halloween costumes last Tuesday. Many donations were picked up by students who were looking for a costume for free.

We are hosting one last costume exchange day on Thursday October 27 at 3 pm. If you have gently used costumes, especially for sizes 8 to 12, please contact us, or bring them to the table on the day of. Please make sure the used costumes are clean, labeled, and put in a bag.

Thank you for bringing smiles to the students.

Music is back ar Southlands! Recorder and flute lessons have started last week on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in the SmartLab, with teacher Mikyla from Mastery School of Music. The PAC is excited to be supporting this optional program for Southlands students.

If you have already registered your child you will have received an email last weekend from  southlands.elementary.music@gmail.com giving you all the details about your child's lessons.

This is the final week students will still be able to register for lessons. The PAC will provide funding for any student who needs financial support to participate. Please contact Nina at southlands.elementary.music@gmail.com.
