Message from the Principal
Mrs Margaret Paxton (@SoutlandsIB)

Hello Southlands Families!

On Friday, our teachers were learning a variety of new things along with their colleagues from around the province.  Some of the professional development sessions they a attended were on the topics of the math curriculum and inquiry, Heart and Mind: the Art and Science of Calm, Indigenous plants at the UBC Farm, Early Education, The Camosun Bog, and Student Inclusion.  I was at the BC Principals’ Conference in Pentiction where I presented on Self-Regulation (the Dr. Stuart Shanker approach).

We are looking for some parents to join our IB Parent Committee.  We will be meeting 2 – 3 times this year and want to get your ideas and feedback about how to make our program even stronger and more successful.  Please phone, email me or drop by the office to learn more.

Thank you for sending your children to school prepared for any weather.  On the wet, west coast, we want to show that we value outdoors exercise and exploration – and a little rain won’t stop us!  Boots, rain jackets, hats, and a change of clothes would be most appreciated.

Speaking of clothes:  our Lost and Found rack is overflowing with jackets, hoodies, sweaters, water bottles and a couple of nice lunch kits.  If you could label things that children bring to school, we can easily reunite them!

Lastly, we are looking forward to seeing you at Conferences in a few weeks.  November 6th and 7th will be Early Dismissal Days for conferences.  Mark your calendars!

Happy Diwali to everyone who celebrates the Festival of Lights.

Thank you for your continued support, and as always, please get in touch if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Message from the Principal
Mrs Margaret Paxton (@SoutlandsIB)

Hello Southlands Families!

Hello, Southlands Families.  It was a short, but very busy week at school.  On Thursday we participated in the Great British Columbia Shake Out with an Earthquake Drill.  In May, we will be having a more extensive practice with family unification, etc.  On Thursday our cross country team ran their final race of the season at Trout Lake.  We are very proud of all of them.

Some free soccer sessions will be offered in the next few weeks with the VanU Football Club.

VanU is really pleased to be able to offer a free lunch hour (12:20pm to 12:47pm) soccer program at Southlands Elementary run by experienced staff coaches at the club. We’re working with school staff to ensure a fun, learning environment for kids who are new to the sport as well as kids who may already be playing. The program will run on October 22, 24, 29th and November 5th and is available to Grade 1 to 7 students. All you need to do is register (no cost) on the VUFC website to help us plan for the number of players who will be participating at each age group.

Register (no fee) here by Oct 21st to participate: https://vancouverunitedfc.com/en-ca/player-registration-information
The registration form is very short and simple but if you don’t have an account on our Stack registration system you’ll need to take a few minutes and set one up before you can register. Once you’ve done that choose “VanU Goes to School” program from the list of programs we currently have open for registration. You are welcome to contact us with any questions at info@vancouverunitedfc.com.

VanU looks forward to working with Southlands students in this new program!

Finally, please remember that Friday is a Professional Day, province-wide. There will be no school for students on Friday, October 25th

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Please complete the registration form and bring payment to the school before end of day Thursday, Oct 24.

Thanks to everyone who has dropped off costumes. If you still wish to drop off any costumes, please do so before noon on Monday. There will be a bin outside the office where business can be dropped off.

Southlands PYP blog

Southlands PYP has a new post on the learner profile for Nov, Inquirer.  At Southlands, we encourage students to be curious, to follow their passions, to ask powerful questions, and to seek answers to their questions.  We want students to develop the ability to think critically and to consider the best ways to search for information.  How students arrive at answers is just as important as the answers themselves.  In fact, our students soon discover that some of the best questions lead to more questions instead of answers!

Please join Ms King's class for their Inquirer assembly on Oct 24.
