Message from the Principal
Mrs Margaret Paxton (@SoutlandsIB)

Hello Southlands Families!

We had a great week.  One of the highlights was the Cross Country Running Meet at Balaclava Park.  Our runners were once again strong and determined.  We have one more meet on Thursday, Oct. 17th at Trout Lake, which takes place during school time in the afternoon.  Many thanks again to the coaches, Mrs. Wood and Mr. Lee, to the parents for marshalling at our practices, and for everyone cheering each other on.  Go Southlands Go!

On Monday, our new Office Administrative Assistant, Alex Hughes, started at Southlands.  Please come by and say hello!

Our Learner Trait for October is Inquirer.  Margaret Mead, the great cultural anthropologist said, “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.”  I had a chance to meet with four students from Divisions 1 and 2 last week.  I wanted to hear from them what they are learning, what they are thinking about the world, and what they value.  They told me that they are learning about history in order to not repeat mistakes that were made in the past, that they are learning to be critical thinkers and not believe everything they read and hear.  They also told me that they believe the two biggest issues in world today are the Climate Crisis and our growing dependence on technology.  They are clearly deep thinkers and true Global Citizens!  I plan to meet and talk with more students like this over the school year.

Thanks to the parents and caregivers who were able to attend the first PAC meeting.  All are always welcome!  Please come when you can.

Finally, a very Happy Thanksgiving to all of our families.  We hope your long weekend if full of fun, family and a chance to relax and recharge.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton
