Hello Southlands Families,

This week our grade 6's and 7's have been busy finalizing their Exhibition projects. We hope some of you will be able to attend the online presentations. We congratulate our students for their hard work and perseverance, and for taking action in their chosen area of study.

We also had a successful Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, with many messages of kindness posted around the school. Beginning tomorrow, March 1st, we will be focusing on the Learner Trait Balanced. A good dinner table conversation topic is: What does being balanced mean to you?

In two weeks we will be on Spring Break. We hope everyone stays close to home to stay safe. As we near the one-year anniversary of the start of the pandemic, we are reflecting on how much we have learned since last March, and continue to hope that we will begin a more "normal" school year in September. Thanks to you all for your continued vigilance with Covid-19 protocols..

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Tech, Covid & Kids: Reset for Healthy Habits

On average, teenagers are checking their phone over 150 times/day and spending about 7 hours/day on screens, unrelated to school and homework – and this was before the pandemic. These rates skyrocketed during the lockdown and now children, teens, and adults all need to rely on screens more than ever before. Given technology’s links to problems like anxiety, addiction, and cyberbullying; parents & teachers must now reset children’s tech habits towards learning, connection, self-care & adaptability.

Join psychiatrist, best-selling author, and mom of three, Dr. Shimi Kang MD for an interactive webinar where you will learn:
  • How technology is impacting your child’s brain, body, and behavior
  • How to differentiate between healthy, stressful & addictive tech experiences.
  • How to reset your child’s tech habits for a successful school year
  • Guidelines on how to maintain healthy tech habits in your school/ home during the pandemic and beyond
This 1 hour interactive webinar will be divided into three 15 min sections with Q&A for each part.
  • What is the right age to introduce a device to your child?
  • How do we know if there is a tech problem like addiction and what to do?
  • What are some tools to help reset homes & classrooms towards a healthy tech diet?
Southlands PAC has worked with other local PAC's to bring this webinar to our Southlands family on March 9. If you have questions you would like Dr. Kang to address, please email Nina before the session.

If your answer to any of these is yes, why not try out for the Vancouver Vikings Swim Club? Our summer season runs from May to August. We welcome swimmers of all ages to our assessment in April, especially new swimmers aged 6 to 10. Our youngest swimmers must be able to swim at least one length (25 m) of front crawl (freestyle) and one length (25 m) of back stroke unassisted.

You can find out more about our club and assessment criteria at http://www.vancouvervikings.com or if you send an email to assistantregistrar@vancouvervikings.com.
If any students have been curious about Synchronized Swimming, also known as Artistic Swimming, one of our grade 7 students is now in her fifth year of training.  This sport combines swimming, dancing and gymnastics, while strength conditioning and working towards flexibility.

Experienced athletes, in both the Provincial and National competitive streams, work with coaches to create Routines (solo, duets or in a team).  Contact us if you would like to learn more about training programs, and to register for a future Try-It, Summer training camps, or next season.  Our Technical Director, Meng Chen is a former National Team Olympic coach, and has placed some of our Senior athletes on the podium in international competitions!
