Hello Southlands Families,
We hope you received our School Newsletter on Friday. Our big news is the Virtual Book Fair that will be happening Feb. 15th - 26th. Here is the link for shopping!
https://virtualbookfairs.scholastic.ca/pages/5156090
The school will get a credit for 20% of the sales. Thank you for supporting your child's literacy and Southlands!
Last week we welcomed Ms. Larissa Lightburn back from her maternity leave. She is really enjoying teaching Div. 8. Next week we will be celebrating Lunar New Year and Valentine's Day on Thursday. We are asking staff and students to wear red that day. We hope each family enjoys the long weekend with the Professional Day and Family Day.
As always, if you have questions or concerns, please get in touch.
Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Are you about to launch your 2021 planting? West Coast Seeds is offering a great selection of untreated, non-GMO seeds for your garden and there is still time to click and order before the February 16 deadline. Southlands will earn 40% from each sale: it is a PLA(e)NTiful way to raise funds for our outdoor and gardening projects.
Unsure which seeds you can start now? Check out their article on Seeds for an Early Start: pepper, lavender, lemongrass - all are available through the WCS fundraiser website. Or choose other 'normal/late' start seeds from their beautiful catalogue - whatever appeals to your grower's soul.
You can also order the seeds via sending us ( southlands.fundraising@gmail.com) your completed electronic order form. If you are placing an order yourself online - please remember to choose "Southlands Elementary School" from the dropdown menu.
We will be also sending the seeds order paper forms in the backpack mail this week, so please keep an eye on those.

The Department of Educational Psychology at UBC is seeking parents of children ages 3 - 16 to attend a free 30 minute workshop and complete a 15 minute survey as part of a study on online parent learning. The self-paced workshop will provide 6 research-based strategies parents can use to de-escalate challenging moments with their children, in ways that promote emotional intelligence, and strengthen relationships. Parents may participate using their own device, and complete the workshop at their convenience.
In appreciation for their time, all study participants will be provided with a download link for a toolkit for parenting with emotional intelligence, and have an opportunity to enter a draw to win one of 30 CAD $50 Amazon gift vouchers. Spaces are limited, and the study will close on 15 February.
For more details, go here or email Angela Low.
