Please lend a helping hand

We need your commitment so that we know days are covered by volunteers.  We welcome guardians, grandparents, aunts and uncles to help. Please click this link to sign up.

Hotdog/Pizza - volunteers needed on Dec 6, 13

Winter Social - volunteers needed on the morning of the Tuesday Dec 17 to wrap baked goods, and volunteers need on Dec 18 to run the bake sale

PAC meeting sign - Looking for a volunteer to hang the sign up the first Wed of every month there is a PAC meeting (an ideal job for a JKC family who arrives by 8:15 am)

Crossing guards - Intermediate Students are eager to be cross walk volunteers, but we need an adult to manage the organization. Can we have one or two parents to please take this over? You can ask Mr Lee what is involved as he was the organizer last year. VPD will come and speak with volunteers about traffic safety before starting.  Students or parents would be volunteering at the cross walk 8:40 am-9 am and 2:55pm - 3:15 pm every day.

Hello Southlands Families!

Hello, everyone. On Thursday and Friday, I attended the BC Superintendents Association Fall conference. Over the two days, we heard from four inspiring speakers: Dr. Santa Ono, president of UBC, Dr. Jan Hare, Associate Dean of Indigenous Studies at UBC, Shane Safir, author of The Listening Leader, and Dr. Margaret Wheatley, scholar, author and leader in the field of organizational behaviour and social change. It was the second time I’ve seen Dr. Wheatley and she continues to inspire me. She spoke about the concern she has for people today having “content without connection,” for example, being in contact with others through social media, but having no true connection or relationship in community. She said, “Ethics is how we behave when we decide we belong together.” She also said, “Listen to the children.”

Through conversations, advisory groups, teaching in classrooms, walking in the forest, and lunch time clubs, I am committed to listening to the children of Southlands and responding to their needs. To every adult who comes into our space and does the same, whether it is through teaching, volunteering, sponsoring a club or just being a caring adult: Thank you!

Please consider coming to our IB Parent Meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 26th at 6:30 pm to learn more about IB and how to engage with you child about their learning. We will be discussing the foundations of the IB and you’ll have a chance to give us your input in the area of Communicating Student Learning.

Have a great last week of November, and as always stay in touch.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (@SouthlandsIB)

IB info session

Tuesday November 26th at 6:30pm

Do you have any question or curiosities about our IB Primary Years Programme at Southlands?

Do you have any questions about how the BC curriculum is integrated within the six transdisciplinary themes that guide units of inquiry?
  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Sharing the planet

Did you know that the Units of inquiry interweave subject areas such as mathematics, language arts, science and social studies? This approach encourages students to make their own connections between what they learn in core subject areas and how it relates to the world around them.

This session is for all parents/guardians of current Southlands students. We aim to help you develop a better understanding of the PYP at Southlands and your role in your child’s IB education.

RSVP appreciated, but we welcome everyone!
Please let us know if you require childminding.

Fundraise while shopping!

Thank you to the families who have joined our FlipGive team! We have already earned $25! Please sign up this week and we can earn a $10 bonus for every person who joins and makes a purchase in November.

Shopping online through the FlipGive Southlands team is a fundraising method that allows you to shop and have a commission go to the PAC. There are no extra costs to you.

Use the FlipGive app or browser plugin before shopping online at stores like Starbucks, Amazon, Sportchek, Nike, Bay, The Gap, Indigo, etc. and you will be ensuring a percentage of your purchase gets credited to Southlands programs. There is even a way to shop in-store and get the same benefit!

Download the FlipGive App or visit www.flipgive.com/join to sign up. You will be asked to enter the Southlands Elementary team code FRJ3Z5.

How does it work? Stores on FlipGive pay a commission whenever you shop with them via their app or website, and FlipGive shares that commission with the team you are registered for. You can choose to make your shopping purchase private and no details of your shopping are shared with the PAC.

Happy Shopping!

Join DPAC on Thursday November 28: 7-9:30pm

The goal of this session is to provide a lens on “What is Sustainability?” and to create an educational forum for gathering and distributing information on sustainability. From the City of Vancouver’s citywide plans to the actions of individuals, the session will highlight work being done to promote and involve communities in sustainability and responsible citizenship. This is an opening for parents to share, learn, and enhance the efforts taken by community members.
