Hotdog/Pizza - volunteers needed on Nov 15, 22, 29

Hello Southlands Families!

Our school was very quiet on Friday after all of Thursday’s Hallowe’en excitement. Many of our students were taking part in celebrations at Musqueam as November 1st is Musqueam Day.  Musqueam Day celebrates the R. vs Guerin Supreme Court Case, “a landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision that established the Canadian government’s fiduciary duty to First Nations, a trust-like relationship stemming from the sui generis rights of Aboriginal Title.”

If you are interested in learning more, here are two useful websites:

Many thanks to the parents who help to organize the hot dog and pizza Fridays.  We know it is a lot of work, but you make so many children happy!  Thanks, Cecilia, Renee and Jen and all other parents who make Friday lunches special at Southlands.

This week we have goal-setting conferences on Wednesday and Thursday.  We hope all families have a chance to meet with teachers this week, but if not, please call to make an appointment at another time that works for you. Please note – there is Early Dismissal at 2 pm on these days.

Friday, Nov. 8th is a professional development day in the Vancouver School District.  Most of our staff will be at school deepening our shared understanding about assessment.

Have a wonderful weekend, and as always, if you have any questions or concerns please get in touch.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (@SouthlandsIB)

Volunteers Needed Nov 7, 1-3pm!
Please join us (rain or shine) as we work together to clean up our (non-food) garden beds and make the school look fabulous. This is a great way to connect with other parents. Please bring garden gloves, rakes, bins, and brooms.

A date has been set for the always-fantastic Southlands Winter Social on December 18, and the PAC is looking for volunteers to organize our traditional bake sale! Please register if you want to help organize this event!
Flute is back!
Beginning in November, flute lessons can be offered as a lunch-time club for students in grades 4-7 on Thursdays if there is enough interest. If your child is interested, please register online.

Choir has started. Its still not too late to sign up if your child is still interested!
Cross Country

We had a very successful cross country season, with 30 students participating.  We had two practices a week in the forest, three meets with other west-side schools, and the final district meet at Trout Lake.  Every participant should be proud of their efforts and their good sportsmanship.

Thank you so much to all the parents who helped out with team!  Heather Couch was our coordinator extraordinaire.  We couldn't have had our practices on the forest trails if she hadn't been so proactive in organizing our volunteers.  Thank you to all the parents who supervised on the trails, who ran with us, and who drove to and from all the meets.  The cross country team is such an important part of our school life and we are so grateful for all the support we receive!

Could all cross country team participants please return their washed jerseys to Ms Wood as soon as possible.  Thank you.

Ms King's class has been exploring Art
Earth Kids Club meets every Friday at lunch. Come join them!
