Greetings, Southlands Families,

Teachers are looking forward to meeting you this week for our Goal-Setting Conferences. Please remember that on Wednesday and Thursday students will be dismissed at 2 pm and arrange for early pick up. Thank you!

We sent home the bi-weekly School Newsletter via email on Friday and hope you received it. This week Student Leadership organized our first Spirit Day. Congratulations to Levi in Div. 9, Felicity in Div. 7 and Dash in Div. 5 for their creative costumes. The next Spirit Day will be November 19th. It is Heritage Day, an opportunity for students to wear or bring something from their culture to share with class. The final Spirit Day of 2021 will be Pajama Day on the last day of school before Winter Break, December 17th.

Our Fall Food Bank Drive begins tomorrow. We are hoping to collect 250 items for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. If you prefer to make a cash/cheque donation, please send it to the office with your child. Thanks for your generosity!

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

At the DPAC General meeting on October 28th, 33+ Vancouver PACs (including Southlands) voted 94% in favour for a motion to hold off on irreversible facilities decisions that impact students until VSB plans are transparently updated with the latest data on where kids live now (Canada Census 2021) and where kids will live in the future (Vancouver Plan, Broadway Plan, Jericho Lands Policy Statement, etc.).

The motion as voted on can be found here

Dear Southlands Parents,

We are so excited to be rolling out the hot lunch program starting this Friday, November 5th.  We have chosen to use the local company C'est Mon Cafe which meets the health and safety standards set by the VSB, and which has been serving delicious food to Vancouver schools for several years.  As we transition into bringing back the hot lunch program at Southlands there might be some hiccups along the way, so please be patient as we continue to iron out the details. If you have any questions please contact us at southlands.elementary@gmail.com

Lunches will be served on Fridays and can be ordered directly from the C'est Mon Cafe website https://www.cestmoncafe.com/

Once on the website please select Southlands, this will bring you directly to the ordering section for Southlands Elementary

After selecting Southlands, please select the "order here" button

Once you've hit the "order here" button you will be able to view the menu being offered, please note that menu offerings have been organized by DATE.
Once you've decided what meal you would like, you can select the button "order form" to place your lunch order.

Come Read with Me workshop

After the success of the workshops this spring, ONE TO ONE is again hosting virtual workshops for interested parents/caregivers of students in Grades 1-3 called Come Read with Me.

Come Read with Me is an interactive workshop based on our tutor training and facilitated by a ONE TO ONE educator designed to give parents and caregivers the opportunity to learn positive strategies to help them support their children when reading at home. Participating families will receive a digital resource package including the “Reading Success at Home” handbook. This program is available at no cost to families across British Columbia through the generous support of our donors.

The sessions are on November 2, 10, 18, 24, and 30. They start at 6:30 and run for 60 minutes with time for questions after. Each session is the same - parents only need to come once.  To register and for more information, please visit https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/one-to-one-literacy-society-32436852611

Greetings, Southlands Families,

As October draws to a close, we are thinking about the upcoming Family Conferences on November 3rd and 4th. On both of these days, student will be dismissed at 2 pm. Teachers will be inviting each family to a meeting on Microsoft Teams. Please take advantage of this opportunity to have a conversation and set some goals for your child's learning. Of course, you can request a conference with your child's teacher at any time of year.

Friday Hallowe'en requests:
  • On Friday, students are invited to wear a costume if they choose.
  • Please no weapons or replicas.
  • Please no masks on in the halls or playground.
  • We prefer that candy is left at home.
  • Food cannot be shared among students.
Fall Food Drive: Student Leadership is organizing a Fall Food Drive for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank between Nov. 1st and 12th. Our goal is to collect 230 items, one for every student and staff member.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Southlands Spirit wear Sale!

This Wednesday, Oct 27th, Southlands PAC will be selling Southlands T-shirts and other Spirit wear outside the school at 3pm. We have a range of sizes and items available for payment by cash, cheque or e-transfer on the day.

A group of volunteers led by Caroline Dickson, our PAC Gardening Coordinator, did a fall garden cleanup last week in the much appreciated sunshine. They raked up many leaves, pruned the red berry bushes against the school, pruned the herb garden, trimmed the butterfly garden and weeded the sign bed. There were 6 volunteers in total, including 3 from families new to Southlands. Huge thanks to Carol, Holly, Jenni, Hen, Tiffany and Caroline for working so hard to keep our school beautiful!

If you are interested in helping out with future garden projects, please email Caroline at southlands.elementary.garden@gmail.com

Cross-country is now over. A big congratulations to all the students who took part, Southlands had a strong performance in all grades. Thanks to Ms Wood, Ms Paxton, Ms Alexandra and Mr Lee for coaching the students.

A big thank you to the parents who volunteered at the practices. A special thanks to Heather Couch who has been leading the Cross Country Coordinator for the last few years. Heather will be leaving Southlands next year so we are looking for a new coordinator. Please email Nina at southlands.elementary@gmail.com if you are able to help.

At the PAC meeting last week, it was agreed that Southlands will support Queen Elizabeth Annex's motion at the upcoming Oct 28th DPAC meeting to call on Trustees to put a freeze on school closures and make the planning process in the Vancouver School District more transparent. You can read the proposed motion here, and you are welcome to join the DPAC meeting to hear the discussion. Please contact Nina at southlands.elementary@gmail.com for the Zoom link.
Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to be a class parent for their division. We are still looking for class parents for:
  • Division 2: Gr 6/7: Ms. de Montigny
  • Division 3: Gr 5/6: Ms. Phung
  • Division 8: Gr 1/2: Ms. Mudaliar (second parent needed)
Please email michelle.mccarthy09@gmail.com if you are able to volunteer.

PAC Directory

Southlands PAC collects contact information for each student and their family on a voluntary basis. This information is made available in a directory for PAC and parent use. The directory is a great way for classmates and the families of Southlands school to connect, and for PAC volunteers to communicate about PAC activities. All information is to be used in the Southlands community only, and is not used for solicitation or any other purpose. The Directory is organized by the PAC and not by Southlands Elementary school staff.

This year the PAC directory has moved online. Instead of paper forms that were sent home every year, the PAC directory can be filled out online. Please take a few minutes to enter your information:

VSB Education Plan

Thank you to all those who have already provided their input as the Board of Education develops an education plan that will guide the Board’s work for the next five years.

The Education Plan establishes the Board’s vision and sets the direction for the District. It is important that the Board receives community input as they gather the views of students, families, staff and the public.

They are now beginning the next round of the engagement process (round two of knowledge gathering), and the Board is once again seeking community input. This will involve a series of focus groups moderated by Directions Evidence and Policy Research Group. The purpose of the focus group sessions is to develop a deeper understanding of perspectives on how well the VSB is preparing students for the future.

Parents/guardians are invited to take part in virtual focus group sessions taking place in October and November. Students and staff will also be taking part in dedicated focus group sessions.

Please consider applying to join one of the focus groups to ensure that the Board hears from a diverse range of families in this process.
Thank you to the families who have joined our FlipGive team! We have already earned $486 for Southlands programs. We encourage others to join the team using code FRJ3Z5.

Use the FlipGive app or browser plugin before shopping online at stores like Starbucks, Amazon, Sportchek, Nike, Bay, The Gap, Indigo, etc. and you will be ensuring a percentage of your purchase gets credited to Southlands programs.

Throughout the year any purchases online from Mabel's Labels will earn our school a rebate when you select "Southlands Elementary School" from the menu. Thank you for your support!
