Please make sure you review the daily health assessment (english or simplified chinese) before sending your child(ren) to school. Or use the K-12 Health Check website.

If you are late to school, your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. Please call the office at (604) 713-5414 or use the new doorbell beside the door so they can let the child(ren) in.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Greetings, Southlands Families,

Today's message from the Principal is going to about Dressing for the Weather! Like most lower mainland schools we go out to play rain or shine. Some students are coming to school without warm and waterproof clothes. Other students are choosing to not wear their jackets and become soaked through to the skin. We know it must be very uncomfortable to sit in wet shoes and clothing for most of the day and not conducive to learning. We are asking your help to please send students with waterproof outerwear and to speak to your child about actually wearing it. Thank you! We do have some spare jackets, boots and clothing items we would be happy to lend. We also have the undercover area for sheltered play.

We had a good turn out for Student Leadership this week with a dozen students, mostly in grade 4 and 5. All students are welcome to attend on Tuesdays at lunch in the gym. We have already planned some fun Spirit Days and are considering which non-profit groups in the community we would like to support.

Thank you for reading and I wish you a warm and dry week ahead.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Join us for this month's PAC meeting. Every parent and caregiver with a child at Southlands is automatically part of the Parent Advisory Council. Register to get the zoom details, review the agenda, and come hear about the plans for the upcoming year

Please email southlands.elementary@gmail.com if you want to add items to the agenda for the meeting.

Queen Elizabeth Annex PAC is organising to bring the No School Closures / Transparent Planning First motion as a PAC-lead motion to the October 28th DPAC General meeting -- the first time PACs will have brought a motion to DPAC for voting. They are asking for at least ten other PACs to support this motion and are currently gathering support.

If they receive enough support, on October 28th, DPAC Reps for each school would debate, amend and finally vote for or against supporting the motion. DPAC Reps have the authority to vote representing their school's PAC, so we would like to discuss this motion at our upcoming Southlands PAC meeting this Wednesday, Oct 20.

If the motion is passed, Queen Elizabeth Annex PAC hope that, together with DPAC Exec's June support of the motion, this will help send a clear message to Trustees to advocate for transparent planning before any irreversible decisions are made.

The working document for the motion is posted at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OF6JLbkcdBp-G-mhlBpjqWOYJxD-vsmsN3a2HNEVZOw/edit?usp=sharing

If you have any questions or comments please bring them to our PAC meeting this Wednesday, or email the PAC exec at southlands.elementary@gmail.com and/or southlands.dpac.rep@gmail.com

PAC Directory

Southlands PAC collects contact information for each student and their family on a voluntary basis. This information is made available in a directory for PAC and parent use. The directory is a great way for classmates and the families of Southlands school to connect, and for PAC volunteers to communicate about PAC activities. All information is to be used in the Southlands community only, and is not used for solicitation or any other purpose. The Directory is organized by the PAC and not by Southlands Elementary school staff.

This year the PAC directory has moved online. Instead of paper forms that were sent home every year, the PAC directory can be filled out online. Please take a few minutes to enter your information:

VSB Education Plan

Thank you to all those who have already provided their input as the Board of Education develops an education plan that will guide the Board’s work for the next five years.

The Education Plan establishes the Board’s vision and sets the direction for the District. It is important to have community input as we gather the views of students, families, staff and the public

If you have not already done so, please take time to complete the short survey to share your expectations and aspirations for Vancouver schools. It takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Responses are anonymous. Your input is important to us.

Please visit edplan2026.vsb.bc.ca

Thank you for your help as we form a roadmap that will lead the District to improve outcomes for students.
Thank you to the families who have joined our FlipGive team! We have already earned $486 for Southlands programs. We encourage others to join the team using code FRJ3Z5.

Use the FlipGive app or browser plugin before shopping online at stores like Starbucks, Amazon, Sportchek, Nike, Bay, The Gap, Indigo, etc. and you will be ensuring a percentage of your purchase gets credited to Southlands programs.

If you are ordering groceries online from Stong's, please pick "Southlands Elementary School" from the drop down menu so that the PAC can earn a rebate. Thank you for your support!
