Please make sure you review the daily health assessment (english or simplified chinese) before sending your child(ren) to school. Or use the K-12 Health Check website.
If you are late to school, your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. Please call the office at (604) 713-5414 or use the new doorbell beside the door so they can let the child(ren) in.
If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Greetings, Southlands Families,
We hope you are having a wonderful long weekend. Someone I follow on Twitter, Jennifer Gonzales, recently posted a question to teachers: "What can parents/guardians do to make this year a easier for you and their child?" I thought the replies were really interesting. One was, "Please get children off social media as it is impacting their mental health." Another: "Delete TikTok from every device." Also, "Put cutlery in the child's lunch... seems silly but every day this matters and takes time away from other things." We are definitely noticing the effects of excess screen and social media time, particularly with older students. As well, it is often the little things that make a difference to teachers, like sending cutlery, labelling your child's belongings, reminding them to follow covid protocols at school, especially keeping hands to self, and letting teachers know if there is something going on at home that might be upsetting your child or causing them to lose sleep. We'd love to hear good news, too!
Speaking of technology, the student cell phone policy at school is this: If a student brings a cell phone, or any other electronic device to school, it is to stay in their backpack during the school day and not be taken out onto the playground at recess or lunch. Alternatively, the teacher can lock it up in their cupboard between 9:00 am and 3:03 pm. That is what I would advise my child to do, as unfortunately, sometimes things go missing.
I am curious about how you would answer the question, "What can teachers do to make the year more successful?" If you have suggestions, please email me or your child's teacher, or catch us on the playground at pick up time. Never feel that any question is too small or silly. We want you to have comfort and confidence in what is happening at school.
Student Leadership Club meets this and every Tuesday at 12:20 in the gym. All students are welcome to join to plan school spirit days, fundraising and other leadership activities. I am the club sponsor.
Happy Thanksgiving, and as always, please get in touch if you have questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

VSB Education Plan
Thank you to all those who have already provided their input as the Board of Education develops an education plan that will guide the Board’s work for the next five years.
The Education Plan establishes the Board’s vision and sets the direction for the District. It is important to have community input as we gather the views of students, families, staff and the public.
If you have not already done so, please take time to complete the short survey to share your expectations and aspirations for Vancouver schools. It takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Responses are anonymous. Your input is important to us.
Please visit edplan2026.vsb.bc.ca
Thank you for your help as we form a roadmap that will lead the District to improve outcomes for students.
