Please make sure you review the daily health assessment before sending your child(ren) to school. Click here to review.

If you are late to school, your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. Please call the office at (604) 713-5414 so they can let the child(ren) in.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. Our school code is 79.

We are now officially halfway through the strangest school year! Thank you for your continued support in reminding students to follow the health and safety protocols at school. We can do this!

Good News for Book Lovers: In February, we will be having an Online Scholastic Book Fair. All orders will be delivered right to your home. We will send you the link in the school newsletter on Friday. Twenty percent of sales come straight back to the school library.

Online Chatting: Quite a few of students are using an online chat tool called Discord. Discord users are supposed to be 13+ years old. Some students are using inappropriate language and are viewing inappropriate content. We strongly advise parents to monitor their children's online activity. For more information about Discord: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/parents-ultimate-guide-to-discord#:~:text=Discord%20is%20a%20free%20app,or%20video%20in%20real%20time.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please get in touch.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

VSB Option 4 Survey

The VSB has recently circulated a survey to Option 4 families, to ask about their preferences once the at-home learning program is scheduled to end on March 1st. If you are hoping for the program to continue, an advocacy group for Option 4 families is suggesting that you select "Other" in the survey. If you would like to connect with the advocacy group, please contact Kyenta Martins at kyenta.martins@gmail.com or 604.671.0504. Ms Martins is not a Southlands parents but is asking for PACs' assistance in communicating with Option 4 parents.
Reminder that the "Seeds-for-the-Garden" fundraiser with the West Coast Seeds is now open for ordering.
  • The fundraiser campaign will run from January 25, 2021 – February 16, 2021
  • Seeds would be delivered to school at the end of the campaign. More details on the pick-up are coming
  • There is a minimum of $10.00 for each individual order.

How to order:
  1. Online - please go to https://fundraising.westcoastseeds.com/ and after completing your cart - choose ‘Southlands School’ from the organization dropdown menu. Add in your details so that we can contact you when the orders are ready for pick up. Please ensure that you order from this site only, otherwise Southlands will not earn the 40%. And any orders from their main website will be subject to shipping charges.
  2. Electronic order form through Southlands PAC - please fill in the order form and return along with payment (cash/cheque/e-transfer) to southlands.fundraising@gmail.com by February 16, 2021.  Please remember to choose your province and include all your contact information.
We very much hope that you will find lots of inspiring ideas for your 2021 gardening projects and thankful in advance for supporting us!
The Department of Educational Psychology at UBC is seeking parents of children ages 3 - 16 to attend a free 30 minute workshop and complete a 15 minute survey as part of a study on online parent learning. The self-paced workshop will provide 6 research-based strategies parents can use to de-escalate challenging moments with their children, in ways that promote emotional intelligence, and strengthen relationships. Parents may participate using their own device, and complete the workshop at their convenience.

In appreciation for their time, all study participants will be provided with a download link for a toolkit for parenting with emotional intelligence, and have an opportunity to enter a draw to win one of 30 CAD $50 Amazon gift vouchers. Spaces are limited, and the study will close at the end of January 2021.

For more details, go here or email Angela Low.
Throughout the year any purchases online from Mabel's Labels will earn our school a rebate when you select "Southlands Elementary School" from the menu. Thank you for your support!

Thank you to the families who have joined our FlipGive team! We have already earned $300 for Southlands programs. We encourage others to join the team using code FRJ3Z5.

Use the FlipGive app or browser plugin before shopping online at stores like Starbucks, Amazon, Sportchek, Nike, Bay, The Gap, Indigo, etc. and you will be ensuring a percentage of your purchase gets credited to Southlands programs.
