Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello Southlands Families,

Another week has passed. Did you know that there are only nine weeks left in this school year?!

On Friday, 20 lucky students got to go to the airport for a behind the scenes tour. This trip was sponsored by the Indigenous Education Department at VSB and YVR. We got to see what time of STEM work goes on at the airport - recently voted the best airport in the world!

In May, we will be having STEM workshops from the UBC Engineering Faculty at Southlands in every class, thanks to a grant we received for Student Leadership from the VSB. We look forward to telling you about it.

We sent home a Southlands School Newsletter via email on Friday. Read it to see more photos from around the school.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (she/her)

Register to attend ‘How to Nurture the Natural Roots of Self-Esteem’ with Dr. Deborah MacNamara!

The Sir Alexander Mackenzie Elementary PAC is thrilled to be hosting author, speaker and clinical counsellor Deborah MacNamara for an evening presentation and Q&A! We’d like to extend the invitation to parents beyond our community to join us for this special event.

Nurturing the natural roots of self-esteem
May 8, 2024
6:30 - 8pm (includes Q&A) Over Zoom
Register to attend!

About the presentation:
Self-esteem has become a popular concept, with varying ideas on how to cultivate it in our children. There are two main strategies used to develop self-esteem, one built on shaky grounds and another that is more sustaining and enduring. The developmental roots of natural self-esteem will be discussed, along with strategies for providing for its growth. Parents are ideally positioned to nurture an intrinsic sense of self worth in their child which will help grow them into their full human potential.

About the speaker:
As a trusted and experienced clinical counsellor for over 25 years in mental health and educational settings as well as private practice, Deborah serves as a leading international expert who provides counselling and educational services to support parents, professionals, and educators. She is also a professional speaker who has presented to the United Nations and The Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education.

Deborah specializes in the relational-developmental approach based on the work of Dr. Gordon Neufeld, empowering parents to become the expert on their children with everyday questions and practical strategies. She came to this work as a new mother herself, curious and confident that his approach could shift not only her children’s futures forever, but also her professional approach to supporting and helping others. Today, she serves on Faculty at the Neufeld Institute.

Deborah is the author of the best selling book, Rest, Play, Grow: Making Sense of Preschoolers (or anyone who acts like one) which has been translated into 14 languages and the children’s picture book, The Sorry Plane, which is available in three languages. Her new book Nourished: Connection, Food, and Caring for our Kids (and everyone else we love), will be released in September 2023.

Vancouver DPAC is proud to present an in-person parent education event. On May 7, we will have The Other People present to our community at the Prince of Wales Secondary School Auditorium at 6:45pm. This is an opportunity to hear from a local group that represents the great diversity within our district. It will help us learn how bias and discrimination function and impact those affected by it, with the goal of fostering greater understanding and acceptance for everyone. We hope that you will join us for this important and informative event.

Here is a list of upcoming FREE FamilySmart events for families:
