Hello Southlands Families!

The staff and I had an important day of learning on Friday, as I mentioned in Friday’s school newsletter. We are all inspired to try some new things to ensure that school is a safe place for all of our students, to ensure that our students see themselves reflected in the curriculum and in the resources that we use, and to communicate to all members of our school community that there is no room for racism in our schools and in our hearts. At the beginning of the online session, a Southlands student’s uncle, Alec Dan, gave the opening welcome. We then listened to an elder from Musqueam, Mr. Howard Grant, speak about the racism and prejudice he encountered when his children were students at Southlands. We, as a staff, are committed to doing whatever we can to repair the harm that was done in the past and move forward by listening and listening some more. As we state in our recently revised Code of Conduct, let our actions show that we are anti-racists.

A we move into December, we would like to remind everyone that we are maintaining our health and safety protocols and continuing to remind staff and students to wash hands frequently, use proper respiratory etiquette, wear masks in common areas (grade 6/7 and adults) and on the school bus, and stay home if unwell.  Given the latest Provincial Health Orders, in which Dr. Henry asks us to only closely interact with our household members, we’d like to remind parents and guardians to maintain the 2 m distance from staff and from each other when picking up, dropping off, and on the playground after school. Let’s do our part to stay safe, together but apart. #SockeyeStrong

As always, please get in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

We are thrilled and proud to share this video link featuring one of our community parents, Christie Lee Charles:
With Canada set to be the guest country at Frankfurt Book Fair, the special exhibition ‘Let Them Speak! Commentaries from British Columbia, Canada was scheduled to take place from 7 to 21 October 2020 in the Weltkulturen Museum. Three First Nations artists would take part: the weaver Meghann O’Brien (Haida/Kwakwaka’wakw), carver Tom Hunt (Kwakwaka’wakw) and hip-hop artist Christie Lee Charles (Musqueam). The artists were invited to use their own works to comment on the museum’s historical collection from Canada.

Holiday gift cards are back! These make great stocking stuffers or teachers gifts. The funds raised will pay for many important school programs and equipment now and in the future.

By now you should have received a paper form in your child's backpack that you can fill out and send back to school by Wednesday, Dec 3. If you have not got it yet, you can print out the order form and email it to southlands.giftcards@gmail.com. Priya will reach out to discuss payment options.

Your Gift Cards will be ready for pickup in the second week of December. Stay tuned to the newsletter for when they are ready.
