Please make sure you review the daily health assessment (english or simplified chinese) before sending your child(ren) to school. Or use the K-12 Health Check website.

If you are late to school, your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. Please call the office at (604) 713-5414 or use the new doorbell beside the door so they can let the child(ren) in.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.
The VSB is once again moving to close down one of our neighbour schools, Queen Elizabeth Annex. The District's process for deciding school closures has a number of problems, including the data they use for projecting future demand for school places in different parts of Vancouver. This is an issue of concern for all smaller schools, including Southlands, so please consider signing the following petition asking the VSB to suspend all school closures until a better planning process is adopted

VSB stakeholders including parents and students are invited to take part in online consultation meetings and we encourage any Southlands parents or students who have an interest in this issue to take part if they can. The two remaining sessions are coming up on the following dates:
  • Wednesday, January 26, 3:45-4:45PM
  • Thursday, January 27, 5-6PM
Join at https://bit.ly/vsbmacc2022

More information about the VSB's plans for this project can be found here:

DPAC Facilities report

On December 17 some DPAC facilities committee members met with 6 Vancouver MLA’s. The goal was to share parents vision for thriving public schools in Vancouver, the need for accessible schools and other concerns, and to highlight the need to align school planning with infrastructure planning to 2025, that takes into consideration the recent Census and future development throughout the city including the numerous 6-storey rental buildings, duplexes, triplexes after the adoption of the Vancouver Plan

We have a meeting scheduled with Andrew Wilkinson on Wednesday January 26 and would like to invite a Southlands parent interested to become involved in the DPAC Facilities committee who can join us (7 pm online). If you are interested in joining this committee please email Nina at southlands.elementary@gmail.com, who will connect you to the group. For more information please see this report.

Being Principled

In Jan, Southlands focused on the IB trait, principled
Principled people act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences

Please read the Southlands PYP blog for more ideas on how to support our students as they practice this IB trait, and remember to subscribe for blog updates!
