Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello, Southlands Families.

Thank you to the families who donated board games - our cupboard in the smart lab is quite well-stocked now, but we will always accept more donations! See Instagram @SouthlandsIB for some photos of students enjoying the games. Speaking of social media, we no longer post on Twitter/X. Instagram is the best place to catch a glimpse of what is going on at school.

Did you know, since November 27th, 2023, when we began doing Forest Walks with two classes each day between recess and lunch (which allows two teachers of the same grade to collaborate on their IB programs), we have not missed a single day due to the weather. Isn't that amazing and wonderful? Students are very respectful and mindful on the trail: they are learning to stay to the right to allow on-coming walkers, runners, and cyclists to pass, they are learning to not reach out to dogs or startle them in any way, and to respect the forest by staying on the trail and leaving the forest as they found it. Our Forest Walks are very special educational experiences. We are learning to respect, notice and appreciate nature, to be curious, to identify different trees and plants, and to enjoy each other's company while walking.

Speaking of mindfulness, I have been teaching a program called MindUp in Div. 4, 7, 8, and 9. If you child comes home to teach you about the prefrontal cortex, the hippocampus and the amygdala, that is why. MindUp is a curriculum developed by the Goldie Hawn Foundation and the Dalai Lama Centre for Peace and Education. I love teaching it, and the students seem to love it as well.
On Friday, when I was out with the Safety Patrol, a student in grade 3 passed me saying, "I can't wait for Thursday!" I said, "What's on Thursday?" She said, "It's when you come to our class again!" Who could ask for anything more?

Don't forget to sign up for the Sun Run to be on the Southlands Team!

We will be sending home a Southlands School Newsletter on Friday, Feb. 2nd. Have a wonderful week ahead, everyone.

Sincerely,

Hello families!

Is this rain getting you down?  Does the winter seem like it will never end?  Well don't worry--spring is on its way and in the meantime, you can plan ahead to gardening season. We're happy to announce that we will be running a West Coast Seeds fundraiser from Feb. 3rd through Feb. 23rd. You will be able to browse and order your seeds from their website (https://fundraising.westcoastseeds.com/collections/all) with 40% of sales coming back to Southlands!

Be on the lookout next week for more info and ordering instructions.

Students of grades 5 to 7 are invited to challenge and develop their thinking and creativity skills at the Math Circle Workshops.

This is an enrichment program for students organized by the faculty members of the Department of Mathematics at the University of British Columbia and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences.

The goal of these workshops is to convey to students the importance of mathematics in the real world as well as how much fun mathematics can be. We want to get the students excited about mathematics and to give them a setting that encourages them to become passionate about this subject.

The Math Circle Workshops will commence on October 16 and will continue through April, 2024. The sessions take place on Monday evenings from 4:30 to 5:45 pm, at the Earth Science Building (ESB) room 2012 located at 2207 Main mall.

  • There is a $5 fee (cash), per session, per child (parents are  free).
  • Parents are welcomed and encouraged to stay.
  • To book any of these days or for more information send an email to: melania@pims.math.ca.
  • Space is limited. You need to book the sessions you will like to attend. Each session is different and independent from previous sessions.

The Spring dates are:
  • February 12
  • February 26
  • March 4
  • March 11
  • April 8
  • April 15

Hello, Southlands Families.

What a week! Never in my 32 years have I ever experienced two snow days in a row! Thank you all for checking the VSB website and media outlets for the news of the school closure. I only had three phone calls Wednesday morning to ask if school was in session. Mr. Moe and I kept the school warm Wednesday and Thursday so the pipes would not freeze. I am glad that everyone was safe!

Many students were happy to come to school on Friday to play outside with their friends. Now we have very slushy conditions so please send students with boots if at all possible.

We will continue to accept donations of board games - thank you to the families that have already contributed. We are creating a games cupboard in the SmartLab that any class can book. Many social, emotional and academic skills can be practiced while playing board games. Best wishes for the week ahead.

Sincerely,

Join us for this month's PAC meeting. Every parent and caregiver with a child at Southlands is automatically part of the Parent Advisory Council. Join other parents on Zoom on Jan 23 at 7pm, and hear about the plans for the upcoming year.

Please review the agenda for the meeting and email southlands.elementary@gmail.com if you want to add items.

We have 10-15 spaces left in the February 12th cohort of our virtual after-school reading program. Register at http://www.one-to-one.ca/register

Our Virtual Reading Program:
  • Provides weekly, 30-minute reading sessions from February 12, 2024 to May 31, 2024 (with breaks for school holidays)
  • Is hosted on Zoom, using Epic! Books
  • Takes place after school, between 4:00-6:00pm
  • Is free to join, but spaces are limited and dependent on being able to match both family and tutor availability

While we know that every child would benefit from regular reading practice with a ONE TO ONE volunteer tutor, our program is intended to help students who are reading just behind their peers or grade level and could use a little boost to help them take that next step. With that in mind…

We're looking for students who:
  • Need extra reading support and would benefit from practice reading, with a trained volunteer tutor
  • Are in Grades 1-4 in British Columbia
  • Are able to commit to weekly reading sessions from February 12, 2024 to May 31, 2024 (with breaks for school holidays).
  • Are willing to read and cooperate with their volunteer tutor
Fire & Flower empowers self-identified girls and non-binary youth in their incredible transition or rite of passage into adolescence. Through mentorship, nature connection, and community-building, we create a space of radical acceptance for youth to know how amazing they are, just as they are. Participants are equipped with the mindset, tools, and friendships to confidently move into their next life stage. This is a LGBTQ2SIAP+ inclusive space, and a space where we honour each other’s ancestries.

Throughout the week, we explore relevant topics about growing up and integrate the learning with invigorating nature time, crafts, and games. Topics include positive body image, media literacy, physical changes including menstruation, friendships, and stress & anxiety. A parent/caregiver/special adult is invited to join us on Friday afternoon for some facilitated quality time with their child. Major bursaries available.
