Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello, Southlands Families.

What a week! Never in my 32 years have I ever experienced two snow days in a row! Thank you all for checking the VSB website and media outlets for the news of the school closure. I only had three phone calls Wednesday morning to ask if school was in session. Mr. Moe and I kept the school warm Wednesday and Thursday so the pipes would not freeze. I am glad that everyone was safe!

Many students were happy to come to school on Friday to play outside with their friends. Now we have very slushy conditions so please send students with boots if at all possible.

We will continue to accept donations of board games - thank you to the families that have already contributed. We are creating a games cupboard in the SmartLab that any class can book. Many social, emotional and academic skills can be practiced while playing board games. Best wishes for the week ahead.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (she/her)

Join us for this month's PAC meeting. Every parent and caregiver with a child at Southlands is automatically part of the Parent Advisory Council. Join other parents on Zoom on Jan 23 at 7pm, and hear about the plans for the upcoming year.

Please review the agenda for the meeting and email southlands.elementary@gmail.com if you want to add items.

We have 10-15 spaces left in the February 12th cohort of our virtual after-school reading program. Register at http://www.one-to-one.ca/register

Our Virtual Reading Program:
  • Provides weekly, 30-minute reading sessions from February 12, 2024 to May 31, 2024 (with breaks for school holidays)
  • Is hosted on Zoom, using Epic! Books
  • Takes place after school, between 4:00-6:00pm
  • Is free to join, but spaces are limited and dependent on being able to match both family and tutor availability

While we know that every child would benefit from regular reading practice with a ONE TO ONE volunteer tutor, our program is intended to help students who are reading just behind their peers or grade level and could use a little boost to help them take that next step. With that in mind…

We're looking for students who:
  • Need extra reading support and would benefit from practice reading, with a trained volunteer tutor
  • Are in Grades 1-4 in British Columbia
  • Are able to commit to weekly reading sessions from February 12, 2024 to May 31, 2024 (with breaks for school holidays).
  • Are willing to read and cooperate with their volunteer tutor
Fire & Flower empowers self-identified girls and non-binary youth in their incredible transition or rite of passage into adolescence. Through mentorship, nature connection, and community-building, we create a space of radical acceptance for youth to know how amazing they are, just as they are. Participants are equipped with the mindset, tools, and friendships to confidently move into their next life stage. This is a LGBTQ2SIAP+ inclusive space, and a space where we honour each other’s ancestries.

Throughout the week, we explore relevant topics about growing up and integrate the learning with invigorating nature time, crafts, and games. Topics include positive body image, media literacy, physical changes including menstruation, friendships, and stress & anxiety. A parent/caregiver/special adult is invited to join us on Friday afternoon for some facilitated quality time with their child. Major bursaries available.
