Message from the Principal
Mrs. Margaret Paxton (@SouthlandsIB)

Hello Southlands families!  We had a great week harvesting, preparing and cooking soup for the whole school to eat with delicious bannock.  Thanks to Ms. Beck for organizing and to the parent volunteers who came to help.  How lucky we are to be able grow, prepare and  share food with one another.

On Monday, we will having our Orange Shirt Day assembly at 9:15 am.  Please join us if you can. To learn more about this important day please see the website

Some of our students and their families attended the Climate Strike on Friday.  We applaud their activism.  I have sponsored Earth Kids Clubs at my other schools and would like to do so at Southlands as well.  We will have our first meeting on Friday, October 4th at 12:20 in Ms. Morrison’s room, 213.

Lastly, our first PAC meeting will take place on Wed. Oct. 9th at 6:15 pm.  Please join us!  It is a great way to be connected with the school community.

Margaret Paxton

Class Parents

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to be a class parent so far. Michelle will be sending an email out to the group shortly, please let her know your email if you didn't put it on the sign up sheet.

We still need a class parent (or 2) for Ms Kim's class, division 9 and Mr Lee's class, division 1, preferably a grade 7 parent. This role does not have a huge time commitment, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Michelle.
Soup Day

The Second Annual Southlands Fall Soup Day was held on Friday. A BIG thank you to Mrs. Beck for organizing and leading this successful event! Participating students from Grades 6/7 chopped veggies and family volunteers (chef Steve Barry, Julie Tyas and daughter Cecily, Cheryl Cameron, Priya Gupta, and Jodie Dorrington) helped supervise chopping, preparing and serving the soup.  We are also grateful to our Southlands families who made bannock for the G6/7 Fundraiser (Fossella-Duerdan family, Musqueam neighbours) and to the Tsouli family, who purchased the remaining bannock and donated it to the school for soup day. What a great combination and enough for everyone at school to enjoy, with many asking for seconds! In support of Friday’s climate change actions occurring across Canada, the soup and bannock were all grown, sourced and made in our community and many students brought mugs from home to reduce single-use cups.

Grade 7 Graduation Planning

Hello Grade 7 Parents and Caregivers,

Graduation marks an important milestone in your child’s life, which celebrates the successful completion of elementary school and allows us to reflect on the wonderful experiences they’ve had along the way. Graduation at Southlands is a special event with many wonderful traditions – from chocolate fountains and a photo booth to a fun graduation party and a parting gift to Southlands.

There is a lot to be done throughout the school year to make this event in June a success and fundraising is a key element. Based on experience from past years, the Grade 7s will need to raise approximately $5,000 to cover:
  • Graduation Ceremony, including light lunch
  • Graduation party
  • Decorations + partywares
  • Photobooth
  • Candy table + chocolate fountains
  • Gift for Southlands
Grade 7 Parent and Caregiver commitment and participation is also critical to help organize and lead the various activities to make this a special day. To kick-off this year’s planning cycle, the Dorrington’s are hosting the Grad Planning Meeting (adults only) on Monday, September 30th from 7-9 pm (3959 West 32nd Ave).

Kind regards,
Jodie and Jon Dorrington (Quentin)
