Southlands Fall Soup Day is this Friday, September 27th ~ Please look out for a notice delivered in your child’s backpack/agenda.
This soup will include vegetables grown right here in our school garden ~ potatoes, celery, beans, kale, peas, and mini carrots! Mrs. Beck will make/bring vegetable stock to school on Friday along with alphabet noodles, bought onions (sadly, our gorgeous walla walla onions were harvested by others this summer.) The soup will be vegetarian and one pot of soup will be gluten-free. Students are to bring a mug to tip and sip (no bowl or spoon please) to school and soup will be served in the JKC room before, during, and/or after lunch as we have 240 students.
The school is seeking 3+ volunteers between 9:30 am-11:30 am and 3+ volunteers between 11:30 am-1:30 pm to help guide students chopping vegetables, and to help make and serve soup ~ the more volunteers the merrier! Volunteers are to please bring a chopping board, knife, and soup ladle and meet in the JKC room.
In preparation for soup day, five garden boxes were harvested on Tuesday by 4 participating classes. On Wednesday, classes washed the veggies and on Friday, Grade 6/7 students will be chopping veggies. Next week, kindergarten students will plant garlic (a very successful crop!) and one of the classes will make corn dolls with the husks of corn. Everyone is actively participating. We still have pumpkins and squash growing for Halloween.
A big thank you to Mrs. Beck for organizing!
