Dear Southlands Parents and Students,
Are you interested in a STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math) after school club for your kids? More interested in fine arts, music, theater or service learning? This creative problem solving program has it all!
We need kids who are open to learning, working collaboratively in a team, and ready to take on new challenges. The program is free and the goal is to come up with solutions that are mostly making use of reused, low cost and recycled materials.
Last year, our school competed in a program called
Destination Imagination for the first time. A team of grade 5 Southlands students participated, they won 2 rounds of local competitions and even competed in global finals in Kansas City! That part wasn’t free but it was an incredible experience for everyone, and it was amazing to see the kids grow and learn over the year.
This year we are planning to run Destination Imagination as an after school club and are making an open call to all parents and children in grades 4, 5, and 6. There are two parent coaches confirmed, we will need some volunteers to help over the coming months, and we may need additional coaches depending on the number of kids interested. Teams can have a maximum of 7 kids. Ms. Beck will be the school sponsor for the club.
This is a great opportunity for our kids but is also a big commitment. We will meet once a week for an hour after school through to the end of April. As competition dates get closer we would need to meet a bit more often, or for longer each time. In between meetings kids will have to do some individual work on the collective project and would work on it together when we meet.
If you and your child are interested or have further questions please contact
Tasniem Behra (Ayoob Senbel and Idrees Senbel’s mom) By October 9.
