Please make sure you review the daily health assessment (english or simplified chinese) before sending your child(ren) to school. Or use the K-12 Health Check website.

If you are late to school, your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. Parents who are picking students up early must come to the office. Office staff will go and get the student.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.
Hello Southlands families,

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying our lovely warm weather. PAC is excited to share with you some exciting news this coming week. First of all, our PAC meeting will be on Zoom at 7 pm Tuesday evening. We would love to see more parents joining and sharing ideas and/or concerns of our school community.

Next, our hot lunch program will be opening orders for Subway on Sunday. Thirdly, we are also starting the Flute & Recorder program this week.

I'm also excited to let you know that on Tuesday after school, we will have our Halloween Costume Exchange table and on Thursday morning, our garden committee will be hosting a planning party for those who are interested. For any details of the programs or events for this coming week, please find more details below.

Wish y'all a great week ahead,

Renee

Hello, Southlands Families!

We had a great week - such lovely weather. This week we have Immunizations on Tuesday (if you did not sign a permission form for you child - they will not be getting one!).

On Thursday, we will have an Earthquake Drill in the morning and the final Cross Country Meet will be held at Trout Lake. Ms. Wood and Ms. Alexandra will be there. Thank you to Ms. Wood, Ms. Alexandra and Mr. Chan for coaching this year and well done, all Sockeyes!

Friday is the Provincial Pro.D. Day.

I am pleased to tell you that we have received 84% of the form packages back from families (the top sheet is purple). It is important that we get all of them back so that each child can participate in forest walks, use technology when appropriate and be included, or not included in photos and the yearbook. If you have not returned the package to the school, please do so as soon as possible.

Congratulations to Div. 1 who got all of their packages in first. They will win a sweet treat next week. Also, congratulations to Stephie Rose in Div. 8 who won Pizza with the Principal for herself and two friends! Great job, everyone.

Finally, please expect a Southlands School Newsletter in your email box on Monday, Oct. 17th.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Music is coming back to Southlands! Recorder and flute lessons will be starting this week on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in the SmartLab, with teacher Mikyla from Mastery School of Music. The PAC is excited to be supporting this optional program for Southlands students.

If you have already registered your child please look out for an email that has been sent this weekend from southlands.elementary.music@gmail.com which will give you all the details about your child's lessons.

Students will still be able to register for lessons for two more weeks. The PAC will provide funding for any student who needs financial support to participate. Please contact Nina at southlands.elementary.music@gmail.com.

Subway lunch is coming back to Southlands every last Wednesday of the month: Oct 26, Nov 30, and Dec 14. The price will be $7. Munchalunch will be open on Monday & Tuesday for orders.
Trick or treat!!! Drop off one and pick up one!

Do you have any gently used costumes you would love to exchange for a different one? Please come check out the Halloween Costume Exchange table on Tuesday October 18, Tuesday October 25, and Thursday October 27 between 3 pm and 3:45 pm.

If you are dropping off a used costume, please make sure it's clean, labelled, and put in a Ziploc bag with size.

Don't have anything to drop off? No worries at all. You can pay $5 and pick up anything you like from our donation table.

We would like to organize a little get together on Thursday October 20th, between 8.30 am and 9.45 am, to meet and chat with people interested about Southlands garden planning, and get advice on gardening.

This fall, ONE TO ONE is hosting virtual workshops for interested parents/caregivers of students in Grades 1-3 called Come Read with MeCome Read with Me is an interactive workshop based on our tutor training and facilitated by a ONE TO ONE educator designed to give parents and caregivers the opportunity to learn positive strategies to help them support their children when reading at home. Participating families will receive a digital resource package including the “Reading Success at Home” handbook. This program is available at no cost to families across British Columbia through the generous support of our donors.

We are hosting session on:
  • October 27
  • November 2, 9, 15, 23
  • December 1, and 6.
All sessions start at 6:30 p.m. and run for 60 minutes with time for questions after.
Each session is the same – parents/caregivers only need to come once
