Hello Southlands families

As we head into this new school year we are looking forward to seeing all the Southlands children and families again. For some children this will be a return to school after a year of at-home learning, and we also have many children coming to Southlands for the first time. Every family of a child enrolled at the school is a member of the Southlands PAC, which is here to offer connection, support and guidance for everyone. We do this throughout the year by planning fundraisers that help the school to provide a rich program of educational activities for the children, by organising social events to bring our community together, and by offering advice and support to families as they navigate the school system. Please keep an eye out for our PAC welcome table on Wednesday, 8th September, and do not hesitate to get in touch with any of the PAC executive committee members throughout the year, whether it is to ask how you can get involved in PAC activities or to find support.

Your PAC Executive this year is:
Co-Chairs: Nina Monahan & Renee Hui
Treasurer: Priya Gupta
Secretary: Alejandra Diaz
Fundraising: Carmen Chou & Linda Yang
DPAC rep: Geraldine Teixeira

Our teachers and staff will be heading into their second year of guiding and caring for our children with Covid protocols in place, and we hope that you will join us in supporting them by taking steps ourselves to keep our children and school staff safe. These include checking your child each morning for any symptoms of illness and keeping them home if in doubt; wearing a mask at all times on school grounds; and keeping a safe distance from others when at the school. Most of all, we hope that we can all come back together with kindness and care, and have another wonderful year at Southlands.

Nina & Renee
PAC Co-chairs

Hello, Southlands Families!

I am so pleased to be writing this weekly message to you again. I am grateful to the PAC for including me in their weekly newsletter. Thank you for understanding that the PAC newsletter is separate from the school newsletter, which will be sent out by email from the office every other Friday.

Hopefully, you have all received the email that we sent home on Thursday outlining the health and safety procedures for September and the shape of the week.

Here are a few other things to keep in mind. The Southlands teachers are not all teaching the same grades as they were last year. Teaching assignments vary year to year depending on the enrollment. Also, due to the large number of students enrolling across the VSB, we will likely need to wait until Monday to move into new classes. When this happens, please show your child that you are happy about their new teacher and class and excited to hear about what they will be learning. Our caring staff members put a great deal of time and thought into class placements. All of our teachers offer different gifts to students and all are committed to excellence and personalization of the learning for each child. By modeling a positive attitude towards their placement, you will help your child to settle into their class and attach to their teacher, which will improve their experience of school this year. Thank you for understanding.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please get in touch. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton
