Hello Southlands Families!

We had a great first week of 2020!

Many students enjoyed the snowy day today.  Some were a bit underdressed and were not prepared for the cold and wet.  Please know that we play outside every day, whatever the weather.  We have resources to help families obtain coats, mitts, boots and toques, so please do not hesitate to ask if you need help.  We would be happy to help.  Having a change of clothes at school is also a good idea.

On Monday we are having Milton Randall, the percussionist, come to Southlands.  He will work with all of the classes in the morning and there will be an assembly at 2 pm.  Please join us if you can.  On Monday, we will also be sending home the January Newsletter with information about the IB Information Session for new students, the upcoming Lockdown Drill, and more!  It will come as paper and an email, if we have your email address.  Make sure your child enters to win Pizza with the Principal!  The draw will be on Friday the 17th.

We are always looking for parent volunteers to help with lunchtime clubs from 12:20 – 12:50 once a week. You do not need to be an expert at something to sponsor a club.  For example, if you were willing to sponsor a Chess Club, you would not need to know how to play chess.  The students will be the experts!  Other ideas:  Reading Club, Guitar Club, Drawing and Doodling Club.  Please let me know if you are interested or have questions.

Finally, thank you again to all of the amazing volunteers who make our Friday Lunches a big success.  You are appreciated!

All the best for the week ahead,

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (@SouthlandsIB)

We are excited to let you know that the school has now ordered $9,000 worth of new laptops, thanks to money raised in last year's Direct Donation campaign. Our fundraising campaign for this year will be starting soon, with goals to raise money for more technology, arts education, money for additional classroom supplies and field trips, and refreshing the school facilities such as re-painting the basketball court and installing a new water bottle filling station.

Fundraise while shopping!

Thank you to the families who have joined our FlipGive team! We encourage others to join the team using code FRJ3Z5.

Shopping online through the FlipGive Southlands team is a fundraising method that allows you to shop and have a commission go to the PAC. There are no extra costs to you.

Use the FlipGive app or browser plugin before shopping online at stores like Starbucks, Amazon, Sportchek, Nike, Bay, The Gap, Indigo, etc. and you will be ensuring a percentage of your purchase gets credited to Southlands programs. There is even a way to shop in-store and get the same benefit!

Download the FlipGive App or visit www.flipgive.com/join to sign up. You will be asked to enter the Southlands Elementary team code FRJ3Z5.

How does it work? Stores on FlipGive pay a commission whenever you shop with them via their app or website, and FlipGive shares that commission with the team you are registered for. You can choose to make your shopping purchase private and no details of your shopping are shared with the PAC.

Happy Shopping!
