Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello, Southlands Sockeyes!

The highlight of last week was our Orange Shirt Day Assembly. One of our students, Daniel, danced a traditional dance while his dad, Darren, drummed and sang. The whole audience was mesmerized. Thank you to Ms. Phung and the students of Div. 3 for helping to MC (Grace and Michelle) and read letters they had written to Orange Shirt Day founder, Phyllis Webstad (Audrey, Cassie, Ramona), and Jane read one of the 94 Calls to Action: Call to Action 63. Thanks to everyone for wearing orange shirts to commemorate this important event.

Next week is Australian Rules Football Week! We will have Jack from AFL Canada here to teach all classes during gym. Next week we will also have Meet the Teacher from 3:00 - 4:00 pm. Come and see where all the learning happens and meet the staff who work with your child.

Lots of coats, jackets, hoodies are being left on the playground at recess and lunch. If you are able to label your child's outerwear, we will reunite them!

Lastly, thank you for NOT walking through the parking lot at drop off and pick up. It is a few extra steps to go around, but it helps students stay safe.

Have a wonderful week ahead.

Sincerely,
Margaret

There is still space for K to Gr2 students to sign up for recorder classes. They start this week on Tuesdays at 3:10pm in the Smart Lab. If you want your child to join recorders, please send the pink registration form as soon as possible. Recorders can be purchased from the teacher.

Thursday flute classes are now full and start on Thu this week at 3:10pm

Junior Lifeguard Club is a program that develops swim strokes, introduces recognition of distressed swimmers, teaches first aid and rescue skills.  This program is for kids age 8 and up who can swim some front crawl, back crawl and breastroke. Participants will earn sticker achievements towards their Canadian Swim Patrol Levels (Rookie, Ranger, Star Patrol), which are directly transferable into the Swimmer program at other facilities.  This program is great for kids who want a different challenge and who are interested in fun skills to keep engaged, while developing important skills to stay safe around water.

Bronze Star is a program for kids age 8-12 years old.  Bronze Star prepares swimmers for success in Bronze Medallion while serving as a fun introduction to lifesaving sport. Bronze Star develops candidates’ swimming proficiency, lifesaving skills and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics and acquire self-rescue skills. Unlike the continuous learning in the Junior Lifeguard Club, Bronze Star is a 10 hour course that certifies successful candidates to go on to the Bronze Medallion course.

These programs run out of Saint George's Kerr Pool at 29th and Camosun Street. Please visit http://www.vancouverlifeguards.com/ for more information

UBC Math Circle

Students of grades 5 to 7 are invited to challenge and develop their thinking and creativity skills at the Math Circle Workshops.

This is an enrichment program for students organized by the faculty members of the Department of Mathematics at the University of British Columbia and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences.

The goal of these workshops is to convey to students the importance of mathematics in the real world as well as how much fun mathematics can be. We want to get the students excited about mathematics and to give them a setting that encourages them to become passionate about this subject.

The Math Circle Workshops will commence on October 16 and will continue through April, 2024. The sessions take place on Monday evenings from 4:30 to 5:45 pm, at the Earth Science Building (ESB) room 2012 located at 2207 Main mall.  Location: https://science.ubc.ca/about/esb

  • There is a $5 fee (cash), per session, per child (parents are free).
  • Parents are welcomed and encouraged to stay.
  • To book any of these days or for more information send an email to: melania@pims.math.ca.
  • Space is limited. You need to book the sessions you will like to attend. Each session is different and independent from previous sessions.
