Hello Southlands Families!

We hope you are all well. With the worsening Covid situation in BC, we have increased our safety protocols in the school.  We are adhering to our health and safety protocols as strictly as possible, and our students are being very cooperative. We are keeping students strictly in their own learning groups during recess and lunch. If staff members have to support another class because of staff shortages, they must log it on Teams for contract tracing. These are all recommendations from the school district and Vancouver Coastal Health. After school, especially on sunny days there are a lot of students and parent staying behind on the playground. This is a very lovely thing about our school – the way families meet and children play – when we are not in a pandemic.  We must maintain physical distance, wear masks and limit our exposure to people not in our households. We will not be policing the playground after school. We are just asking you to consider the risks and act accordingly. We have been so lucky so far.

Thank you so much for helping us stay #SockeyeStrong!

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Knowledgeable Learner Attribute

For the month of April we are focusing on being Knowledgeable.  Mr. Lee’s class and Ms. Alexandra’s class are preparing a video about what it means to be knowledgeable, and this will be shared with the school on Teams before the end of the month.

To help your child become more knowledgeable, you can initiate conversations that encourage them to think about knowledge by asking questions like:
  • “Why do you think that is important to know?”
  • “Can you think of anything that’s happening now that might be similar to…?”
  • “What does that make you think of?”
  • “Does that remind you of anything else you’ve learned?”
  • What can we do to answer that that question?
  • How can we learn more about that?
  • What is the connection between curiosity and knowledge?
  • How can you use your knowledge to make a change?
