Hello Southlands Families!

We hope you had an enjoyable long weekend, despite the current restrictions on socializing. On Friday, April 1st we emailed home the bi-weekly Southlands School Newsletter. Please read it for updates on our new COVID protocols, other news and photos from around the school. We are very grateful to the PAC for giving us this space in the weekly PAC newsletter. Between us, we aim to keep you informed about special events and all of the wonderful things going on at school.

As always, if you have questions of concerns, please get in touch.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

The Photo Day that was scheduled for this week has been postponed to May. The good news is it will be held outdoors to social distance. Stay tuned for the new date.
All Grade 7 parents are invited to join the first grad planning meeting on Apr 8 over zoom. The committee is inviting ideas for what legacy gift the graduating class would like to plan for the school, and also suggestions on what kind of celebration could be done.

Southlands Garden Update

Over the past week or two, Sharlene from SPEC has been teaching Southlands student cohorts about the many fascinating topics around farming for food. Your child might like to share what they’ve learned with you about seeds, soil, worms, and more! This is happening in our beautiful raised garden beds behind the school. For families that are newer to the school, and may not know, these garden beds are the result of collaboration and investment between parents, teachers/staff, the VSB, and Tupper Secondary Students.
We are also lucky to have Eduardo Jovel, a Southlands parent, advise us on our dedicated Indigenous plant bed. He is a part of the Indigenous Initiatives at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm. Thank you Sharlene and Eduardo!

Please join us for a spring garden clean up at the end of April. No experience necessary! The date will confirmed closer to the end of the month. Thank you!

Thank you everyone who supported our first round of the West Coast Seeds fundraiser! We hope that you are making the best use of the WCS seeds in this inviting spring weather. If you missed a February chance to get the kale or basil for your summer salad or wildflowers to bring back the butterflies and please the eye,
We are excited to open our second round of West Coast Seeds orders!

Southlands gets back 40% from each package that you buy - so please spread the word among your friends, neighbours, co-workers and the family. It is an excellent way to support our school and get Canada #1 seeds that are untreated, non-GMO and suitable for organic growing.

Fundraising ordering will be open April 1 to April 15 and seeds will be delivered to school shortly after mid-April.

How to order
  1. Online - please go to https://fundraising.westcoastseeds.com/ and after completing your cart - choose ‘Southlands School’ from the organization dropdown menu. Please add your name, your child’s name and your child’s division number.
  2. Paper: please fill in the paper forms (which will be distributed in the backpack mail) and return them to the school office by April 15.
  3. E-form: please fill in the linked order form and email to southlands.fundraising@gmail.com by April 15
We are accepting e-transfer, cheques and cash payment (submitted to the school office). There is a minimum of $10.00 for each individual order.

We very much hope you will be inspired by the West Coast Seeds best-selling varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers and support our Green spring fundraiser
The latest DPAC newsletter is now available at http://vancouverdpac.org/generalannouncements/2021/4/1/april-2021

DPAC is gathering parent questions on the draft VSB 2021-2022 budget to be answered at our April 13th Budget townhall. The VSB budget is in a shortfall position, so it is important to hear parent questions and concerns. Submit questions (and get more info) here.
