Please make sure you review the daily health assessment before sending your child(ren) to school.

Drinking fountains are closed, so please send a clearly labelled water bottle to school with each child, which can be re-filled during the day at the classroom sinks. Our custodian, Mr Moe, runs the taps in every sink each morning to ensure that the water is clean and cold, so these sinks are very safe to use for drinking water. With the weather still warm and smoky it is particularly important that children are staying hydrated.

If you are late to school, your child must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. Please call the office at (604) 713-5414 so they can let the child in.
If you know of new parents joining Southlands, please encourage them to sign up for the newsletter at https://mailchi.mp/5aebe3e7c025/southlands_pac. This year most PAC communication will be digital given the restrictions at school.

Greetings, Southlands Families.

It was wonderful to see many of you this week.  We are delighted to be back in the school with children! Thank you for your cooperation with our safety precautions and routines.  The students who attended the orientation days were very respectful and careful. We have a 60% return rate at this time.

If your family chose Option 4, the Temporary Transition to school option, a staff member will be in touch with you next week.  We hope that you will consider returning to in-school attendance on October 13th, November 9th, or January 5th.  Please note that we need a one week advance notice of your child’s return.

We are SO grateful to Kerry Marchinko, father of Jeannie, Sascha and Cecily, who made us a beautiful new flag stand.  We can now proudly display all four of our flags, including our Musqueam flag.  Thank you, Kerry!  Kerry and a former Southlands student also made us the two beautiful planters that are by the playground.

We are also SO grateful to our wonderful PAC.  They have purchased a beautiful Southlands t-shirt for every student!  We will be handing them out on Monday.  Wearing our Southlands shirts will be a great way to show school spirit and celebrate our wonderful community.  Thank you again for your kindness and generosity.  #SockeyeStrong

AND we’d like to thank the Dickson family for their gift of a beautiful work of art:  a sockeye salmon carved by an Indigenous artist.  We can’t wait to hang it up!

If you are new to our school, we look forward to getting to know you and your child and we want to help you feel connected and supported.  This weekly PAC newsletter is a wonderful way to begin.  We also send home regular school newsletters by email.  You can follow us on Instagram and Twitter @SouthlandsIB.

Despite the pandemic, we are planning to have a joyful year of learning and growing.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch.

Principal

Throughout the year, Southlands' Garden Committee looks after the Annual Spring and Fall Garden clean-ups, general garden care of the circular butterfly garden and planters, and coordinates the Summer garden care program. We also support teachers in the Outdoor Classroom and Garden Program, including garden planning, grant writing, summer garden care. If you are interested in joining, please email southlands.elementary.garden@gmail.com ~ Everyone is welcome. No experience required. This is a very rewarding experience with many opportunities to grow the program and impact our school community.

Summer Gardening at Southlands
A very big thank you to all of our families who generously spent time to take care of our garden this summer- weeding, watering, harvesting, and helping keep our garden boxes and grounds stay beautiful for the whole community to enjoy! [Laura Wallbridge, Paula Tisdale, Tasniem Behra, Nina Monahan, Fanyi, Shahrzad Farvani, Teena Aujla, Julie Tyas, Ms. Paxton and Ms. Prins].  Many thanks to Ms. Paxton, who will be placing a letter of thanks for participating in garden care, in the files of the Southlands students from the families who took part.

This summer, we also added two new cedar planters beside the memorial to Southlands student Nathan Warren. Thank you to Kerry Marchinko for building the planters, with much appreciated assistance from a former Southlands student. Thank you also to Caroline Dickson for starting beautiful rosebuds at the south entrance to the school.

Butterfly Garden
Thanks again to Ms. Prins and our student teachers for creating puddling stations and adding new plants, funded by the Suzuki Foundation, to the butterfly garden this spring. The butterfly garden was started by Jennifer Lines and her son Stuart 3 years ago, and it gets more beautiful every year. We are so proud to have attracted so many bees and butterflies to the new stations this summer. We are lucky to have this area as part of our outdoor classroom and beautiful learning environment, for our students.

Fall Garden Clean-up
The Garden Committee is hosting our Annual Fall Garden Clean-up on Thursday, November 5th 1-3pm, where we’ll weed, rake, and prune our garden beds and planters. We are looking for volunteers - no experience required. Please mark your calendar.
