Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.
Please come to our final PAC meeting of the year, on Tuesday June 11th at 6pm in the library. We will say thank you to Ms Paxton for all her support during her time at Southlands, and have the opportunity to meet Mr Larson, the incoming Principal. See you there!
As we come to the end of the school year and prepare for summer vacation, we want to take this time to thank our teachers for all of their hard work. Class parents will be reaching out to families and collecting contributions towards a class gift. If you would like to be included in the class gift for your teacher, please email your class parent by June 21st.

Fire & Flower empowers self-identified girls and non-binary youth in their incredible transition or rite of passage into adolescence. Through mentorship, nature connection, and community-building, we create a space of radical acceptance for youth to know, feel, see and express how amazing they are, just as they are. Participants build confidence and pride in being themselves and moving on to their next significant stage in life. This is a LGBTQ2SIAP+ inclusive space, and a space where we honour each other’s ancestry.

During Fire & Flower's Empowerment Camps, we explore relevant topics about the female body and growing up, and integrate the learning with nature time, crafts, and fun games. A parent/caregiver is invited to join us on Friday afternoon for facilitated quality time with their child.

Groups are small with only 6-12 participants to maximize connection & intimacy. It’s like a 5-day sleepover without actually sleeping over!

In partnership with UBC Camps, Chan Centre for the Performing Arts are excited to offer two unique summer camps in July for children aged 6-12. Both camps are led by experienced and passionate educators. Below are descriptions and links to more information about each camp (including bios of the instructors).

Making and Playing Instruments in Nature
July 8-12 and July 15-19
Be inspired by the synergies of music and nature! This camp invites inquisitive campers to explore soundscapes and the meaning of music through experiential and play-based learning. Together with camp leaders, children will explore their own musicality through multisensory and hands-on activities: building instruments with recycled materials, singing and playing instruments and songs, storytelling, arts-and-crafts, and musical play. By interweaving movement and music with the camp activities, campers will begin to experience rhythms, sounds, emotions and contrasts of music intuitively, creating space for spontaneous musical expression. Activities will take place outside as much as possible and opportunities to play real instruments will be provided.

Press Start: Exploring Video Game Music
July 8-12 and July 15-19
Dive into the world of video game music during this exciting full-day camp! The Rainbow Crystal of the Realm has fallen to the forces of darkness and the world needs a group of brave heroes to reclaim it. Will you join their ranks?  This camp introduces participants to the Elements of Music (melody, harmony, rhythm, etc.) and explores heroes’ themes, villains’ themes, and battle music in video games through games, crafts, and activities. Make your own instrument and play along to some of your favourite video game music, including tracks from Super Mario, Pokémon, and Minecraft! Solve a video game music-themed escape room, test your listening skills as you play a life-sized board game, and more!  Campers will also work together to create their own video game hero theme in GarageBand, which they will share with family and friends during a concert at the end of the week.
