Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello, Southlands Sockeyes!

We had a really good week in our 2023 - 2024 classes. Students are starting to settle into classroom routines and expectations and the Kindergarten students are now full time!

Just so you are aware, we have two designated Supervision Aides on duty at recess and lunch. Their names are Tia and Amy. Also, there are usually 3 support staff and me outside. Please encourage your child to find and staff member if they need support at recess and lunch.

Next week, we will welcome the permanent teacher for Div. 8, Ms. Brittany Laven. She taught at Kerrisdale last year and was very well-liked.

On Fridays in the fall, we have 17 UBC student teachers at Southlands in the mornings. We are happy to support their learning as they are the IB Cohort.

MONDAY IS A PROFESSIONAL DAY - NO SCHOOL MONDAY. We will be doing our IB Planning for the Units of Inquiry.

Thank you to every family for your trust and support as we re-opened the school. Please stay in touch if you have any concerns or questions.

Sincerely,
Margaret

Hello Southlands families

It's been so good to see all the families and students back at school. Our PAC volunteers are already working hard to get programs and activities up and running, and we hope to have registration forms coming out for flute and recorder lessons this week, and our hot lunch will hopefully get started soon too.

To keep all these programs running smoothly we are looking for a few more helping hands! Please email Nina at southlands.elementary@gmail.com if you are interested in learning more about them. We are looking for:
  • a few more volunteers to occasionally help with hot lunch distribution (around once a month)
  • direct donation drive coordinator
  • garden clean-up volunteers (occasional, two or three times in the year)
  • fundraising event volunteers (occasional)
  • staff appreciation volunteers (occasional, help with picking up coffee etc)
If we all do a little, we can achieve a lot together. Thank you for being part of our wonderful community!

Southlands Elementary School

You are invited to join Flute and Recorder Classes with the Mastery School of Music at Southlands Elementary School for the 2023-2024 school year!
Recorder – Grades K-2 / Flute – Grades 3-7

Rehearsals will be held at the following times:
  • Tuesdays - 3:05pm-3:35pm (Recorder)
  • Thursdays (Flute) - 3:05pm-3:35pm
  • Recorders can be purchased for $10 at the first lesson, Flutes may be rented from the PAC
  • First Classes will be Tuesday, September 26th (recorder), and Thursday September 28th (Flute)
Students sign up for both semesters (32 Classes) at the start of the year, with two equal payments, in the form of post-dated checks of $256/semester, semester 1 is September 2023 -January 2024 and semester 2 is February-June 2024. Fees are due September 25th, 2023.

Class attendance is important, and students will need to bring their instruments every week (own personal instruments or those rented through the PAC), as well as their music folders. Attendance at Christmas and year-end recitals is expected, as with other opportunities for group and solo performances through the Mastery School of Music and Southlands Elementary.

Experience the Vancouver Children’s Choir this Spring!

Renowned as one of the finest choirs of its kind in Canada, the Vancouver Children’s Choir is a professional standard choir with an average membership of 24 boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 13. In September 2023, we will be adding a high-performance treble chamber ensemble for 14- to 17-year-olds.

Since 1983, the Choir has provided young singers with the opportunity to learn the foundations of choral music from plainsong and Renaissance polyphony to twentieth-century masterpieces and new commissions. The Choir pursues a varied programme of recordings, concerts and international tours, giving performances under the direction of conductor Rupert Lang. The Choir rehearses at historic Christ Church Cathedral, the oldest building in downtown Vancouver and one of the city's most beautiful and acoustically rich venues.

On Wednesday April 26 and May 3 from 6 - 7:15pm, we are offering students currently in grades 1 to 7 an opportunity to experience what it might be like to be in the Vancouver Children’s Choir. Participants will learn some fun songs, join our choristers in a rehearsal, enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour of Christ Church Cathedral, and take home a goody bag. The VCC Experience Event is free, but advance booking is required by emailing vancouverchildrenschoir@gmail.com with your child’s name, current school year and preferred date (April 26 or May 3). We recommend registering early as spaces can fill quickly.
