Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello Southlands Families,new and returning.

We hope you received our school newsletter that was emailed home Friday afternoon. It has information about routines, reminders and other information we thought would be helpful for you to have.

We will be moving to 2023 - 2024 classes on Monday. We know there may be some students anxious about it. During our Friday assembly, we emphasised the fact that no matter which class they are in, they were wanted by that teacher. Thank you for helping to reassure your child.

All the best for a wonderful school year ahead!

Sincerely,
Margaret

A nonpartisan group of parents from schools across Vancouver is fundraising to stop school closures and land sales, and we have found sponsors to match donations made now.

VSB’s Land Asset Strategy identifies 21 schools for closure, and another 26 sites for subdivision and sale. All of this is happening without understanding what future demand for schools will be. Four schools are pending closure, subdivision and/or sale right now.

Why now?
  • QEA parents’ petition for a judicial review of its school closure process goes to court in October 2023
  • QEA’s case against VSB is strong, and parents have a fair chance of winning if we can stay in the fight
  • VSB’s case hangs on declining student enrolment in the district, while VSB’s own data show that enrolment for elementary schools has been stable since 2012, and sharply increasing since September 2022
  • This case will have huge knock-on effects to save other VSB schools and lands, at this critical moment when the VSB is not protecting its primary interests: public education for the people of Vancouver
  • We've found sponsors who will match donations made -- doubling your donation!
  • VSB lawyers have used tactics to escalate legal costs, but thanks to donors like you, parents have been able to keep going.
How will donations be used?
Court begins on October 5th. Donations will first be used to support QEA’s legal case, and then other schools that need legal, political and media help. Efforts by parents are 100% volunteer, so all of your money is going to direct costs.

Folil trafün (Joining roots) is a showcase of Indigenous and Afro-diaspora films from Latin America (with English subtitles), followed by dialogues to deepen understanding of the films and their relationship with local realities. We will also provide culturally relevant food, from the ʷməθkʷəy̓əm Nation to share with Salishan catering. The films, and subsequent conversations will be framed on themes like Indigenous and Afro-descent identities, migration, Mother Nature, and complex relationships between industry and Indigenous communities. Special attention will be given to how communities work towards territorial sovereignty. We are hosting two Mapuche guests at those events, a Mapuche filmmaker and FicWallmapu Festival Director, and a Mapuche-Huilliche Graphic designer.

The project brings together three main partners:Ficwallmapu, an Indigenous and Latinx collective that puts on a yearly film festival and various smaller film events in the Wallmapu; The Latin American Cultural Centre, a local hub for both Latinx and non-Latinx residents to experience Latin American arts and culture; and the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) team from the Faculty of Forestry at UBC.

The registration is free and on the 28th we’ll have child minding available. Please visit https://forestry.ubc.ca/events/folil-trafun-joining-roots-festival/ to learn more and register.

The Global Climate Strike is just days away. As we approach September 15, we look forward to gathering to demand climate justice with students, young people, parents, and our wider communities on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) lands.

The Strike will begin on September 15 at City Hall, starting at 1:00pm. The march begins at 1:30pm, and will make its way to Vancouver Art Gallery, where we will gather at 3:00pm. Speakers will include journalist Brandi Morin and climate activist Janelle Lapointe. Performers include drag artist Kendall Gender and emcee, Ndidi Cascade.

We need people to show up, and demonstrate the clear need for decisive climate action by leaders in Canada, and on a global scale. The 2019 strike had a powerful and measurable impact on decision-makers in Vancouver and we need this trend to continue. Supporting the strike shows kids we care, and we are ready to take action to support their hopes, dreams, and aspirations for the future.

Please join our Facebook event, and find our strike on the Fridays for Future Strike Map. We must act now, for our future, and the futures of children and youth in British Columbia, and across the globe.
