Please make sure you review the daily health assessment (english or simplified chinese) before sending your child(ren) to school. Or use the K-12 Health Check website.

If you are late to school, your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. Please call the office at (604) 713-5414 or use the new doorbell beside the door so they can let the child(ren) in.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello and Happy Lunar New Year to all Southlands families

We have had nine new students enroll at Southlands in the last month. Welcome to Rowan, Tristan and Brandi, Anna and Daisy, Sophie and Matilda, Logan, Alyssa. We are so happy to have you at our school.

There is lots going on at Southlands, and particularly busy are Div. 1 and 2 with Exhibition. It is a LOT of work and we are especially proud of the students for choosing topics of personal interest that are actionable. Stay tuned for more updates.

Div. 3 is also taking action with a Valentine's Craft Sale next week. Be sure to stop by their stall on Thursday or Friday after school in the front of the school. All items are $1 or more by donation and all proceeds will go to Covenant House. A reminder that due to Covid, we sadly cannot share homemade birthday or Valentine's Day treats. Prepackaged items only. Thank you!

We are doing our best to stay safe and healthy.  That being said, there is an epidemic of anxiety in schools right now, and if you feel that your child is experiencing difficulties, please reach out to us and our school counsellor, Jacquie Allen can help point you to some community resources.

We will be sending home the first School Newsletter of 2022 next Friday, Feb. 11th. All the best for the week ahead, and as always - please reach out with any concerns or questions.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

After the success of their workshops this fall, ONE TO ONE is again hosting virtual workshops for interested parents/caregivers of students in Grades 1-3 called Come Read with Me.

Come Read with Me is an interactive workshop facilitated by a ONE TO ONE educator designed to give parents and caregivers the opportunity to learn positive strategies to help them support their children when reading at home. Participating families will receive a digital resource package including the “Reading Success at Home” handbook. This program is available at no cost to families across British Columbia through the generous support of donors.

The virtual sessions are on February 15, 23, 28, March 10, and 16. They start at 6:30 and run for 60 minutes with time for questions after. Each session is the same – parents/caregivers only need to come once

DPAC has created some working groups and are looking for volunteers:

Music Working Group
This working group has been struck to focus on ensuring music is a part of every student's school experience. Interested parents please contact working group lead, Robert Ford at Robert@quokkasystems.com.  First meeting Feb 10th, info here.

Childcare Committee
The committee is focused on encouraging increased access and wider options for school-age care.  Interested parents please contact committee lead Alan at alan.patola.moosmann@vancouverdpac.org

Facilities Planning Committee
The committee works on Long Range Facilities Planning, Seismic Planning and will be shadowing the VSB Facilities Planning Committee providing feedback to the DPAC Executive. Contact DPAC vice chair at vik.khanna@vancouverdpac.org.

Anti-Racism Collective and Working Group
Vancouver DPAC has created and is holding space for Black (of African Descent) and Indigenous Parents to gather and discuss issues pertinent to them that happen within the context of Vancouver Public Schools (VSB). Parents of Indigenous and African Descent can contact karen.tsang@vancouverdpac.org to find out more.

DPAC hosts a Slack Group for all who are interested in furthering the work of anti-racism and anti-oppression. Please contact Karen at karen.tsang@vancouverdpac.org for an invite to the group. We are especially interested in people from equity-seeking groups (parents and caregivers of refugees and immigrants, students with disabilities, children in the foster system, kids with neurodiversity and those with disabilities, and all who identify on the LGBTQ2S, to name a few) to ensure that parents and caregivers (and community members) can connect with others with similar experiences.

Food framework Working Group
Vancouver DPAC has a seat on the VSB Food Framework Ad-hoc Committee which will create a VSB framework including school food programs, food growing, food education.  More information about this committee is available here. We are looking for parents interested in providing a broader perspective to inform our feedback to that committee.  Contact our rep on that committee, Celena Benndorf at celenabe1@gmail.com
