Please make sure you review the daily health assessment before sending your child(ren) to school. Click here to review.

If you are late to school, your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. Please call the office at (604) 713-5414 so they can let the child(ren) in.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. Our school code is 79.

Our PAC meeting on June 9th will be the Annual General Meeting, the last meeting of the year. Please review the agenda on the blog and register to attend.

At this point we have had no volunteers for the vacant executive roles. Without them the PAC cannot operate, and all of the funds in our PAC accounts - currently around $70,000, will be forfeited. Any future PAC will have to start from scratch.

Current executive members will all still be at Southlands and will support any new volunteers. The current Chair will agree to continue in an EQUAL partnership with a co-Chair, but cannot continue alone.

If you can help ensure the PAC continues to exist at Southlands, please contact Nina at southlands.elementary@gmail.com

These are the roles that MUST be filled for the PAC to continue
  • Chair or Co-Chair: leads decision-making for the PAC, runs meetings, liaises with the school
  • Vice Chair: supports the Chair as needed (not required if Co-Chair is elected)
  • Secretary: takes minutes at PAC meetings, circulates minutes via the newsletter and website, prepares agendas for PAC meetings, tracks action items agreed by PAC
  • Fundraising: oversees fundraising activities, advises volunteers for individual fundraising campaigns, coordinates with school staff as needed
All Southlands families are members of the PAC. We need your help so that the PAC can keep connecting and supporting all of Southlands' children, staff and families!

Hello Southlands Families,

This week we welcomed two new families and their five students to our school. Thank you to all of the Sockeyes, big and small, for making the new students feel comfortable and included.

This week we also tried to process the news about the remains of 215 children found in the Tk’emlups te Secwépmc Nation on the site of the former residential school. Many students and staff wore orange this week to show support for our Indigenous students and their families. We lowered the flag to half mast. We created a public display of support on our fence with 215 orange ribbons. This is important work for all of us to be doing together, to understand the history of this place and ensure that no such things ever happen again. Thank you for all that you do at home to nurture kindness and curiosity in your children.

On June 9th at 11:10 am, we invite everyone to join in a livestream event hosted by the VSB Indigenous Department https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoPYNFKaaxs

Thank you, everyone and please be kind, be calm, be safe.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Munchalunch will be having their summer maintenance starting on July 1. As a result, the program will not be in use during the summer months. Your Munchalunch coordinator will "roll rover" your credits on Munchalunch for the next school year in August. However, if you wish to have your credits refunded before the end of June, please email Renee.  Please make sure to have your request in before 3 pm on Friday June 18th. Note any refund requests after 3 pm June 18 will not be processed. Thank you for a great Munchalunch year!

Dear Parents,

Thank you for helping PAC. We collected 252 cereal boxes for children, so they can have breakfast this summer. We appreciate you posting our Cereal Challenge in the newsletter and encouraging families to bring cereal boxes. We appreciate your support of our principled action!

Sincerely,
Marianne, Daphne, Cathy, Kathy

Grade 7 Fundraising

The grade 7 grad class is happy to announce that with your support they raised $2,478 through the online auction, direct donations and raffle basket sales. With your help they met their fundraising goals! Thank you

Congratulations to the two highest bidders of the online auction:
  • Mr and Mrs Jung
  • The Imani Family
The three winners for the Raffle baskets were:
  • Miss Diana
  • The Lin Family
  • The Lewinson Family
We hope that the Pacific Dogwood legacy tree will be planted soon. Any students and families who would like to join the summer garden watering team please let PAC know.
Franka, Jeannie, Jessica, Keira, Rose, and Sascha performed in the Southlands Flute Recital this past Thursday, and did a wonderful job! Congratulations, and thank you so much for your performance.
Thank you to the Mozart School of Music for all of their work with our students, and for organizing this recital for them!

This has been an exciting spring for Southlands Garden! Eduardo Jovel, a Southlands parent, and Director of Indigenous Research Partnerships at UBC, donated very interesting plants from the Indigenous Garden at UBC Farm to our Indigenous Garden box. We hope to label them, so parents can also take a look and know what is growing. Eduardo also taught a group of students the name and significance of each plant, and led them in weeding, planting and watering afterwards. Thank you so much Eduardo! This group of students will share their new found knowledge with kindergarten students, who will then share their knowledge with future Southlands cohorts.

Caroline Dickson organized the spring edition of our bi-annual Southlands Garden Clean Up. In addition to Caroline, the group included Laura Wallbridge, Jennifer Lines, Southlands Alumnus Jodie Dorrington, and Julie Tyas.  It was a nice morning of re-connecting over coffee and caring for our school. Thank you Caroline for organizing and bringing coffee! And thank you Jennifer for picking up and planting our new orange bedding flowers! Our sign looks beautiful for parents wanting to take end of year school photos beside it.

The VSB also paid us a visit with a new garden box, and a dumptruck full of fresh limestone rocks. Between the garden looking so lush, our new garden box, and the fresh limestone, it really does look pretty.

Last but not least, we want to maintain this garden throughout the summer. We are looking for parent volunteers willing to take one week spots throughout the summer to water and care for the garden. The following weeks need to be filled:
  • July 10-17
  • July 24-31
  • July 31-August 7
  • August 7-14
  • August 14-21
If you are interested in watering, or being a part of the garden in any way, even just to receive garden emails, please email Julie Tyas or Caroline Dickson at southlands.elementary.garden@gmail.com, and we will add you to our email list. If you are interested but do not wish to be emailed, please find one of us in person and we will make sure you are included. You can also ask the office to contact us. No experience necessary!

Southlands PAC is gathering information from families who enrol at Southlands from out of catchment. We would like to learn more about what motivates families to come to Southlands, and to stay. We need this information to ensure the PAC can highlight the value Southlands brings to VSB and resist any "enrollment management strategies".
