Hello Southlands Families!
We want to thank you so much for helping us "hold the line" at Southlands.
Last week, we had a guest principal, Mr. Ian Cannon, step in while I had two vacation days (I was supposed to visit my son in Montreal, but obviously that was not possible). Mr. Cannon is a recently retired principal, a former Southlands principal, who is now working "on call." He told us how impressed he was by our vigilance and adherence to the PHO orders. I am extremely proud of the staff and students of our school for maintaining the rules and protocols and the Health and Safety plan our staff made. We will not relax these protocols until we are given the green light to do so by Dr. Bonnie Henry.
This week, I reminded students about the recess and lunch playground zones: K - 3 on the swings/play equipment, grades 4/5 on the space needle and the side and back fields, grade 6/7 on the basketball court and the picnic table area. They were reminded that during collaboration time, they can play wherever they wish, as long as handwashing takes place before and after. It is not forever, it is just for now. Thank you again!
Our final school newsletter of 2020 will be emailed on Dec. 18th. Take care!
Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Our students are all playing chess! It is quite a thing! If anyone has chess sets at home collecting dust, we'd love to give them a home! Thank you!

Dear Southlands Elementary,
I represent a group of Option 4 families who have joined together to support each other.
At this time, there are 3,497 Option 4 students in Vancouver, equivalent to 7 public schools. There is no standardization of learning for Option 4 - it is very different from school to school, and there is limited communication with Option 4 students and families. We are working to provide a connection for those families. We provide a place to share resources, provide support on hard days, and share stories.
We currently have 180 members in our group on Facebook, Option 4 Families of Vancouver SD#39, and a group on Slack. Those of us who have joined have found it has made a big difference in our experience with Option 4. We have a connection with a community, which is important for everyone at this time.
If you have any questions about our group, or about Option 4, please reach out to me at kyenta.martins@gmail.com or 604.671.0504.
Best regards,
Kyenta Martins

Southlands PAC extends a huge thank you to Caroline Dickson, Keira's mum, who organized a Zoom get-together yesterday for Southlands students to decorate gingerbread houses together! It was a fun holiday event and a great opportunity for students to get together, whether they are learning at home or at school.

Please complete a brief DPAC survey, due Tuesday, Dec. 15. The survey asks about families’ experience with the school year so far and asks what they would like to improve. This survey will help guide DPAC’s work and advocacy efforts on behalf of all PACs for the coming months.
Take the survey at https://tinyurl.com/y2ewcbju.

Fill a Santa Paw for the Holidays!
Grade 4 student Aurora is a HUGE animal lover and wants to help the animals in this difficult time in 2020 for the holidays! She has started an online GoFundMe to raise funds to help animals.
We will be donating the proceeds to TWO organizations because Aurora loves animals so that much that she couldn't decide between them. The two organizations are Charlie's Pet Food Bank, an organization that helps people with animals in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, by collecting $$ for pet food, toys, and kitty litter. We will also donate half of the proceeds to RASTA Sanctuary, a Rescue And Sanctuary for Threatened Animals (RASTA), who provides a forever home to rescued farm animals and strives to promote a more compassionate world through education and advocacy, and need money and supplies for their many rescued animals.
To contribute, please go to the online Gofundme https://gf.me/u/zbjhdm
We thank you on behalf of all furry animals for your help!!
