Hello Southlands Families!

We are looking forward to the next two weeks of togetherness before we depart for the winter holiday.  This year we are making a strong effort to honour all cultural celebrations, not just Christmas.  If you have family traditions and customs that your child would like to share with their classmates, please contact your child's teacher.  We also know that this will be a difficult month for some families who have been affected by the pandemic.  If you know of any Southlands Family in need of some support or cheer, please let us know.  Thank you!

We would like to welcome our newest staff member, Ms. Karolina Kapusta.  Ms. Kapusta will be working as a part time Resource Teacher.

Thank you for reminding your children about our Covid protocols and procedures.  As always, if you have questions or concern, please call.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton
Principal (@SouthlandsIB)
Please join the executive for our final pac meeting of 2020 and before our winter break. We will present the financial reports from last school year and the budget for this school year.

If you have any agenda items to add, please contact Nina.

Get into the holiday spirit and join us Saturday December 12th at 4:30pm for a school wide gingerbread house making Zoom event!

To participate, please add your child’s name to the Google Sign Up Sheet and purchase a gingerbread house at your local grocery store. SaveOn and Costco carry these kits for approximately $12.  The children will be put into breakout rooms to build and decorate their houses together. Note that it’s easy to make a Christmas, Chanukah or non-denominational house depending on the colour of your candy decorations!  Further details will be sent out once you register. Please join us!

With the end of term coming up quickly, you may be thinking about how to recognize your child(ren)'s teachers and the other wonderful Southlands staff for everything they have done to keep our children happy, safe and learning.  In years past, volunteer class parents have often organized a group gift from the whole class, however due to Covid we do not have class parents for each Division this year. Group gifts can be a wonderful opportunity for every family to take part in thanking their teacher by contributing what they are able to, or even just adding their name to a thank-you card. This year in particular it is so important to recognize all the incredible hard work of our teachers, support staff, and Principal!

Fill a Santa Paw for the Holidays!

Grade 4 student Aurora is a HUGE animal lover and wants to help the animals in this difficult time in 2020 for the holidays! She has started an online GoFundMe to raise funds to help animals.

We will be donating the proceeds to TWO organizations because Aurora loves animals so that much that she couldn't decide between them. The two organizations are Charlie's Pet Food Bank, an organization that helps people with animals in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, by collecting $$ for pet food, toys, and kitty litter. We will also donate half of the proceeds to RASTA Sanctuary, a Rescue And Sanctuary for Threatened Animals (RASTA), who provides a forever home to rescued farm animals and strives to promote a more compassionate world through education and advocacy, and need money and supplies for their many rescued animals.

To contribute, please go to the online Gofundme https://gf.me/u/zbjhdm

We thank you on behalf of all furry animals for your help!!

Big Sisters of the Lower Mainland are continuing to run Go Girls online (over zoom) and have new programs starting in January. Go Girls focuses on active living, self-esteem, friendships, and much more. Two volunteer mentors lead each session which is filled with fun games, activities, and discussions.
