Greetings Southlands Families.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the PAC Annual General Meeting.  The staff and I cannot thank the PAC enough for all you do for Southlands.  Southlands would not be the school that it is without your generosity and care.  Thank you and congratulations to the new Executive.

During the next two weeks, please connect with your child’s teacher to arrange a time to pick up your child’s belongings.  We have them bagged up and ready.  On June 24th, 25th and 26th, reports cards can also be picked up, at a time to be communicated by your child’s teacher.  A reminder that Monday, June 15th is a Professional Development Day and there will be no classes, online or in person.

We hope you are all doing well.  As always, please be in touch with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (@SouthlandsIB)

The 2020 Grads have voted to donate the full $2,000 they raised for grad towards the purchase of a water bottle filling station for the school. This will replace one of the water fountains currently in the school. Thank you grads!

The VSB will pay for a second one next year. PAC continues to work towards raising another $2,000 for this in the Direct Donation campaign, so that we can fully fund this project for the school.

Our yearbook schedule has been delayed. We will be filling orders now with a planned delivery of the yearbook in September. We are excited to offer two yearbook options this year - in addition to the usual softcover version, we will also offer a hardcover version.

This year, when you pre-order your yearbook, you will also receive a link to an electronic version of the yearbook (without personalization), once it's completed.

In addition if you pre-order, you have the option to personalize your book. You can create your own back cover and up to 4 pages for free!

Order online (Deadline Jun 26)
  • Softcover: $19 + tax
  • Hardcover: $31 + tax

We are looking for photos!
Do you have photos to include? Parents and teachers are asked to email photos or links to photos ASAP to Dina MacDougall

LFRP: Long Range Facilities Plan and Seismic Mitigation
Survey results from the VSB “Building for Modern Learning” were posted on April 29.  It is a 25 page document containing responses from 4185 participants.  Results are starting on page 11 under the Agenda Link

The BC Government June 2020 Seismic Mitigation Program Progress Report indicates that Southlands remains 1 of 244 BC schools in the Future Priorities list.

The next VSB Facilities Committee meeting will be on June 15 and a few updates for Southlands are shared in the agenda. A brief update is provided here in these images:

We are scheduled for $10,000 for building fabric restoration, facility upgrade from the Ministry of Education annual faculty grant. This may include improvements to protect the fabric of the plant, including exterior painting, window and door replacement, building envelope repair and replacement, structural and nonstructural seismic mitigation.

Also, we have now been identified  in the VSB Draft 2021/2022 Five Year Capital Plan Submission containing recommendations for consideration by the Board of Education at the June 22, 2020 Board meeting.

District staff have applied the criteria identified above to the groups of schools within the identified zones to prioritize the funding requests in the proposed 2021-22 Capital Plan Submission.

Music in Elementary Schools
At the June 10 VSB Student Learning and Well-Being committee meeting, Jody Langlois, Associate Superintendent will update about the Elementary Music Program Review. In November 2019 staff initiated a review of elementary music programming to assess and advise on the delivery of music programming in elementary schools.  The following link includes the Recommendations that have been developed following the study conducted by John White (start at page 14 of the 75 page PDF)

The Elementary Music Review contains four recommendations:
  1. Establishing a Shared Mission, Vision and Strategic Directions - It is recommended that the District develop a clear, comprehensive mission, vision and strategic directions for the Visual and Performing Arts in School District 39 Vancouver.
  2. Developing a Plan to Realize the Mission, Vision and Strategic Directions - It is recommended that the District develop a multi-year plan and timeline to guide action that facilitates the achievement of identified Mission, Vision and Strategic Directions.
  3. Actualizing the Vision and Achieving the Goals - It is recommended the District review current practices and develop a plan to put in place the structures and supports necessary to realize a quality, comprehensive K-7 music program that is accessible to all students in the District.
  4. Resources – Instructional Space, Classroom Resources, Leadership - It is recommended that space for elementary general music be recaptured or developed to ensure that each school has a suitable, dedicated space for music instruction.
The Elementary Music Program Review includes a suggested timeline, divided into three phases, to be carried out over a ten year period. Phase one would be completed in the first year of implementation, phase two would be completed in years 2-5, and phase three would be completed in years 6-10.

Garden Committee Coordinator Role OPEN!
As this is Jodie's last year at Southlands, please let the PAC know if you are interested in becoming the new Garden Committee Coordinator ~ it starts this summer and is a wonderful opportunity and very rewarding. In this role, you coordinate volunteers and actively participate in the Back to School, Spring and Fall Garden Clean up, manage the summer garden care and watering program, support teachers and staff on the Outdoor Classroom and Garden Program, communicate updates to the Southlands community and participate in monthly PAC meetings.

My name is Mikyla Jensen and I am the flute/recorder teacher here at Southlands Elementary School. I know that this year really didn't turn out as we expected it to, but I am so proud of all of the hard work of the students that have been attending online flute zoom lessons for the last few months. Therefore, we have decided to put on an online recital for all of our friends and family! It will be hosted by the Mozart School of Music, director Olga Lockwood. The online recital will be on June 25 at 12pm.

Please RSVP if you wish to attend.
While our regular fundraising programs are suspended, our direct donation campaign is still open and donations can still be made online. So far we have collected $2,100 in donations.

Last year, the Direct Donation campaign helped Southlands deliver new programs and upgraded services to our entire student community that were outside of the VSB funding. These included New Laptops, Artist in Residence Music teachers, Arts performances, and Body Science Program. This year, we are seeking to raise $22,000 to fund laptops, Artist in Residence, Water bottle filling station and repainting the basketball court.
