A big thank you to the parents who sent photos. Please keep them coming!

Greetings Southlands Sockeyes!

The Captain and Crew of the Spirit of Southlands hope you are all well and safe.  It is lovely to see photos of our students sharing their activities and learning, participating in Spirit Days, and enjoying the outdoors during this time of isolation.  Thanks for sending them to your teachers.

This month, the District is thinking about how a return to school might look, and our Superintendent, Suzanne Hoffman, posted a video on May 1.  We hope this does not cause any families anxiety.  Health and safety continue to be the District’s priority, and the plans will be developed in accordance with Dr. Bonnie Henry’s guidance.  We will continue to communicate with you through our Wednesday newsletters, through Classroom Teams and via the school website, where we have posted our recent newsletters.  In Dr. Henry’s words:  Be calm, be kind and stay safe!

As always, please get in touch by phone or email if you have any questions or concerns.  We are in the office from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm each day.

Sincerely,
Captain Paxton (@SouthlandsIB)

With the end of the school year rapidly approaching, your PAC is hard at work on the AGM and what PAC will look like next year. We are making a call for volunteers to join the following PAC Committee's:
  • Treasurer: Responsible for the accounts of the PAC and has signing authority for the PAC.
  • Garden Committee: Looks after the flowerbeds and planters on the school grounds. Volunteers meet roughly three times per year to weed, prune and plant. If you like to get dirty and want to volunteer without having to go to meetings or do paperwork, this is the committee for you! No experience necessary.
More volunteer opportunities will be posted in upcoming newsletters. If you would like to be involved with PAC but aren't sure how, please contact Nina

We are also looking for volunteers to water the gardens over the summer. Please reach out to Jodie if you can help!

Thanks to Ms Teresa, our office administrator, Southlands PAC have connected with a charity called the Vancouver Food Runners, who are going to collect our two May deliveries from the BC Nutritional Program (fruit, veggies and milk) and deliver them to programs serving children who are experiencing food insecurity. Several of the Food Runners volunteers are people who live locally to Southlands, and they have over 100 volunteers working to get food to vulnerable populations around Vancouver. We are so pleased to be able to continue sharing the benefits of the BC Nutritional Program even thought we can't enjoy it at school ourselves.
While our regular fundraising programs are suspended, our direct donation campaign is still open and donations can still be made online. So far we have collected $1,300 in donations.

Funds donated during this school year will be used in 2020-21, and we aim to be able to support our school and teachers as planned next year. Last year, the Direct Donation campaign helped Southlands deliver new programs and upgraded services to our entire student community that were outside of the VSB funding. These included New Laptops, Artist in Residence Music teachers, Arts performances, and Body Science Program.

This year, we are seeking to raise $22,000 to fund our basic budgetary demands and enrichment programs that help our children learn and develop the IB Primary Years Program Essential elements: Learner Profile; Transdisciplinary Themes; Concepts, Attitudes; Approaches to Learning and Action. The money raised in this campaign will be used to purchase the following items in the 2020-21 school year:
  • Technology - Laptops for lower intermediate grades     $10,000
  • Classroom Funds                                                           $5,000
  • Artist in Residence - for in-class arts programming       $5,000
  • Water bottle filling station                                               $2,000
  • Repainting basketball court                                            $1,000

This is the final week of Operation Rocket. If you are dropping off at Southlands, please do so by noon on Thursday, May 8. We will be dropping them off Friday afternoon.

The owner of the Johnny Rockets restaurant on Oak Street is launching Operation Rocket to say thanks to the staff at Vancouver General Hospital. They are going to be sending 200 free lunches for the VGH staff daily, for 28 days. Operation Rocket started on April 13th.

They wish to have hand written notes of encouragement and thanks from the community, which they will staple to the lunch bags everyday they run Operation Rocket. To this end they are reaching out to schools and asking local families to provide these notes that they can include. They ask that the notes be handwritten, small in size and not placed inside a sealed envelope, but left open. Then they will staple each note to the side of the lunch bags.

They have left a box outside the restaurant which is on the corner of Oak Street and West Broadway for families to walk by and drop the notes in to.  Nobody will have to come into the restaurant, as the collection box is placed on a table on the sidewalk, by the front door. Alternatively, there will be a box at Southlands, near the steps to the school, near the office. We will gather the notes from there and drop them off at the restaurant.

Please drop off a note to thank our frontline workers and show our appreciation for all they do!

Thank you to the families who have joined our FlipGive team! We encourage others to join the team using code FRJ3Z5.

Use the FlipGive app or browser plugin before shopping online at stores like Starbucks, Amazon, Sportchek, Nike, Bay, The Gap, Indigo, etc. and you will be ensuring a percentage of your purchase gets credited to Southlands programs. There is even a way to shop in-store and get the same benefit!

In this world of social distancing, if you are ordering groceries online from Stong's, please pick "Southlands Elementary School" from the drop down menu so that the PAC can earn a rebate. Thank you for your support!
