Hello, Southlands Sockeyes!

We hope that you continue to be safe and healthy.  We miss you and are thinking of you.

On Friday, we had a Professional Day focusing on Indigenous Education for All.  Our staff had the best and most lively discussion we’ve had all year.  I was so proud of the staff members’ thoughtfulness, creativity and commitment to try new things to strengthen our understanding and practices in Indigenous Education.  We’ve got lots of ideas for the next school year.

By now you will have heard that on Friday, the Ministry of Education announced a gradual reopening of schools beginning June 1st.  At this time, we do not know what that will look like for schools in Vancouver and for Southlands.  We thank you for your continued patience over the next few weeks as more detailed plans are made, with Health and Safety still being the District’s top priority.

We wish you a safe and happy May Long Weekend!

As always, please get in touch if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (@SouthlandsIB)

These two PAC Committee's need new volunteers for the next year. Please consider helping the school!
  • Treasurer: Responsible for the accounts of the PAC and has signing authority for the PAC.
  • Garden Committee: Looks after the flowerbeds and planters on the school grounds. Volunteers meet roughly three times per year to weed, prune and plant. If you like to get dirty and want to volunteer without having to go to meetings or do paperwork, this is the committee for you! No experience necessary.
More volunteer opportunities will be posted in upcoming newsletters. If you would like to be involved with PAC but aren't sure how, please contact Nina

We are also looking for volunteers to water the gardens over the summer. Please reach out to Jodie if you can help!
The DPAC town hall is coming up on May 21. Please submit any questions you have for the DPAC.
The laptops from last year's Direct Donation campaign have arrived at Southlands! IT has set up the 10 laptops and they ready for use by the intermediate grades when classes resume.
While our regular fundraising programs are suspended, our direct donation campaign is still open and donations can still be made online. So far we have collected $1,300 in donations.

Last year, the Direct Donation campaign helped Southlands deliver new programs and upgraded services to our entire student community that were outside of the VSB funding. These included New Laptops, Artist in Residence Music teachers, Arts performances, and Body Science Program. This year, we are seeking to raise $22,000 to fund laptops, Artist in Residence, Water bottle filling station and repainting the basketball court.

How to donate:
  1. Go to http://vsb.schoolcashonline.com/Fee/Details/1869/196/false/true
  2. If you do not have a school cash online account, you need to “click here to register now”
  3. Choose from a list of donation amounts, or enter a specific amount
  4. In the Fund Destination drop down menu select option “E - Southlands PAC”  (do NOT select “E - Southlands”)
  5. In the “Message” field please write one of the items from the Fundraising Goals list on the previous page of this notice, or write “2020 Direct Donation campaign”.
  6. Click “add to cart”
  7. Once payment is complete, you will receive a tax receipt via email.

Thank you to the families who have joined our FlipGive team! We encourage others to join the team using code FRJ3Z5.

Use the FlipGive app or browser plugin before shopping online at stores like Starbucks, Amazon, Sportchek, Nike, Bay, The Gap, Indigo, etc. and you will be ensuring a percentage of your purchase gets credited to Southlands programs. There is even a way to shop in-store and get the same benefit!

In this world of social distancing, if you are ordering groceries online from Stong's, please pick "Southlands Elementary School" from the drop down menu so that the PAC can earn a rebate. Thank you for your support!
