Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello, Southlands Families.

Thank you to everyone who was able to come to the Conferences this week on Wednesday and Thursday. If you were unable to attend, please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher to arrange another time.

Next week we have some student nurses from Langara coming to teach the students in Div. 1, 2, 3, and 4 about the importance of healthy sleep habits. We hope it has an impact.

On Wednesday, some classes might celebrate Valentine's Day. Please check with your child's teacher about what is happening.

Friday is a professional day. The teachers will be learning new things to share with students in the weeks to come. Also, Monday, Feb. 19th is a holiday - Family Day.

Happy Lunar New Year to all those who celebrate.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton (she/her)

Our two grade six/seven classes have begun working on their Exhibition projects. The students have chosen areas of interest and are now engaged in research. As they learn more about the issues they are investigating, the students will analyze and evaluate information, form opinions, and prepare presentations.

Families are welcome to attend the Exhibition presentations, which will be Wednesday March 13 and Thursday March 14. More details to follow.

One component of the Exhibition is learning from experts.  If you, or anyone you know, have skills or knowledge in any of the areas being investigated, please let Mr. Lee, Ms. de Montigny, or Ms. Wood know.  The students would really appreciate the opportunity to conduct an interview and collect first-hand information!

This year the students are investigating:
  • artificial reality
  • cancer
  • disinformation
  • traditional cultural practices
  • slavery
  • nuclear fusion
  • fisheries
  • opioids
  • electric vehicles
  • sports-washing
  • prosthetics
  • international waters
  • gene editing
The next PAC meeting is coming up on Feb 20 over Zoom. Topics include the upcoming Spring fling, house post unveiling ceremony and the direct donation campaign. Please join us and hear about what the PAC is working on.

Send any additional agenda items you may want to cover to Nina at southlands.elementary@gmail.com

Vancouver Minor Softball Association (VMSA) believe increasing youth participation in softball is extremely important for girls and young women, as it will enhance their physical, mental, emotional, and cognitive development.

They have scheduled six clinics, free of charge, to anyone that wants to come out to try softball.  These clinics will take place over three Saturdays in February and March. Details on these clinics are located at https://go.teamsnap.com/forms/417574/signups/new
