Please continue to make sure your child(ren) are healthy and feeling well before sending them to school.

If you are late to school (after 9:00 am), your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. The upper front door is now unlocked during the day so no need to call or ring the doorbell. All parents entering the school must enter through the upper front door and check-in at the office.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello Southlands Families.

Thank you to everyone who was able to come to see the Hip Hop performance on Thursday. We are sorry it was such short notice - next time we will let you know in advance. The students really enjoyed it and we loved hearing them cheer each other on. Thanks to the PAC for helping to fund this great experience.

This week we also had gardening lessons and things are beginning to sprout! We are looking for families who are willing to take on a week of watering over the summer - please let us know if you can help.

On Monday, Divisions 7, 8, 9 and Kindergarten will be going to Science World. Welcome to Kindergarten is Tuesday at 9:30 am.

Have a wonderful week ahead - and don't forget the sunscreen.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Every parent and caregiver with a child at Southlands is automatically part of the Parent Advisory Council. Join other parents and hear about the plans for the upcoming year.

Dr. Deborah MacNamara is the author of the best-selling book Rest, Play, Grow: Making Sense of Preschoolers (or anyone who acts like one), is on Faculty at the Neufeld Institute, and is the Director of Kid’s Best Bet, a Counselling and Family Resource Center. Deborah is a dynamic teacher and experienced counsellor who makes developmental science come to life in the everyday context of home and classroom. She also provides counselling services to parents and professionals to make sense of learning, behavioural, and developmental issues in kids – from babies to teens.

Southlands PAC is proud to offer this presentation by Dr. MacNamara: Making Sense of Anxiety. As many as 20% of children and teens qualify for an anxiety disorder diagnosis, making it the most common mental health issue today. Anxiety can take many forms including obsessions, compulsions, phobias as well as other perplexing behaviours. We cannot treat something we do not understand, and making sense of anxiety is fundamental in making headway. This presentation will bring a fresh and promising perspective to one of our most troubling human problems.
