Please make sure you review the daily health assessment (english or simplified chinese) before sending your child(ren) to school. Or use the K-12 Health Check website.

If you are late to school, your child(ren) must enter through the upper front door by the salmon mural and check-in at the office. Please call the office at (604) 713-5414 or use the new doorbell beside the door so they can let the child(ren) in.

If your child(ren) will be absent from school, please email souattendance@vsb.bc.ca or phone 604-713-5159 as soon as possible and leave your child's name, division number, the date and whether they will be absent or late. If you phone, you will be required to use a school code. The Southlands school code is 79#.

Hello Southlands families

It is my pleasure to introduce two new staff members on the team: Ms. Hilary Brough (Kindergarten) and Ms. Sivan Dinur (Div. 7). Both teachers have had a wonderful first week with their students. We are grateful to have them at Southlands. We have also welcomed a new student in grade 6, and we expect a few more students to join us as their catchment schools are full. Moving schools mid-year is hard, and we really appreciate all of the Sockeyes' efforts to welcome new students and help them feel at home.

Next week the grade 4's and 7's will be completing the Student Learning Survey with myself and Mr. Jung. A reminder that parents of students in grades 4 and 7 can also complete the survey available here: https://www.awinfosys.com/SurveyFull1/central/main/access.asp

Lastly, we'd like to remind you that our Scholastic Bookfair begins online on Monday. The link is here: https://virtualbookfairs.scholastic.ca/pages/5175680
All books will be shipped to your home directly. Bookfair sales give a percentage back to the school, which helps us build our library collection - so thank you for your support.

As always, if you have questions or concerns please reach out by phone or email, or find me at the crosswalk before or after school most mornings.

Sincerely,
Margaret Paxton

Southlands PYP Exhibition

The 2021-2022 Grade 6/7 Exhibition projects culminated with presentations and displays just before Spring Break. The students were able to share their learning with the other classes and with their families, whom we were thrilled to be able to invite into the gym.

The students displayed the Learner Profile attributes and used the Approaches to Learning to inquire into issues they are passionate about. They demonstrated that they are knowledgeable inquirers who take risks and are open-minded to other ideas and possibilities, and they developed and used communication skills, research skills, thinking skills, social skills, and self-management skills while taking notes, interviewing experts, synthesizing ideas, forming opinions, writing essays, and creating powerpoint presentations and display boards, all while working collaboratively with others.

You can see pictures of the exhibition projects on the Southlands PYP blog at

Hello Southlands families!

We hope that you all enjoyed a fun and restful Spring Break. We have just over 12 weeks until the end of the school year. It would be amazing if we could reach our goal of $15,000 for the 2022/2023 Direct Donation Campaign. We are currently half way there. This campaign helps Southlands deliver programs and upgraded services to our entire student community that are outside of the VSB funding. Please consider donating, your generous support is greatly appreciated. You will receive a 2022 tax receipt for any donations made (please see below for details).

Funds raised through this campaign will help support the Outdoor Classroom and Classroom Funds. Our fundraising goals are $10,000 for the Outdoor classroom and $5,000 for Classroom funds.

We would like to say a huge Thank you to all of our donors to the campaign so far. We truly appreciate your support!

Our total received to date is $7,550

To receive a tax receipt:
1) Donate Onlinehttp://vsb.schoolcashonline.com/Fee/Details/1869/196/false/true and select "E-Southlands PAC"- this is the quickest way to receive a tax receipt or

2) Provide cash or write a cheque payable to "Southlands Elementary School" noting "2022 PAC Direct Donation" in the memo and include the pink Donor Recognition Form

Just a reminder, please remember to send the Donor Recognition form to school with the details of your donation, even if you donate online, so that we can be timely with our gratitude. This form also informs us if you would like your name to be included in our recognition of your donation or if you would like to be anonymous. If we do not receive the form, your donation will be considered anonymous.

Thank you again for supporting Southlands Elementary!

Thank you to all families that ordered our Purdy's easter fundraiser. The fundraiser coordinator will be reaching out to you to arrange for pickup next week.
